A dark brew, hardy and warming with a slightly sweet malty character balanced by a pleasant hoppiness. Blackfriar is known as a 'wee heavy'. Whilst not an international classification this term has been used in Scotland for generations to describe strong ales

Bottle. It pours a more or less clear body, dark amber in color and with a minimal sized off-white head. There’s a lot of dried fruits in the aroma, with toffee and a faint note of paint remover. Some bitterness in the flavor, far from as much as I get the impression there would be judging from the description, but at least enough to prevent it from being cloying. There’s some higher alcohol or paint remover in the mouth as well, a bit more than in the aroma actually, and especially in the end. There’s toffee sweetness, some nuts and dried fruits as well. It’s full-bodied and pleasantly carbonated. The finish is quite dry, even though the sweetness can be felt, guess the alcohol and bitterness does their bit of palate cleaning. Overall, I would like this much better without the paint remover touch, as it’s a quite pleasant one if you manage to ignore that. 131119

Czerwono jaskrawa barwa, ze spora i puszysta piana. Kremowo lukrecjowy smak, troche gumy balonowej oraz nuta czekolady. Finisz gozkawy. Jakby lekki akcent miodu takze wyczuwam. Ogolnie piwo tresciwe, dobry przedstawiciel Szkockich ale. Polecam

Bottle at Taps Beer Bar, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a clear dark brown with a broken white head and plenty of broken lace. The aroma was fruity and a little sweet, leading to a medium to strong alcohol bitter taste with lots of malt and liqourice, followed by a little additional sweetness too on the palate. The finish is smooth and weak bitter. It’s the palate where all the burning takes place! It’s a nice, heart warming winter ale and good in the Asian heat too when served cool, but the alcohol is starting to dominate this beer more than I would like.
