The inescapable tripel in this Gronckel series by Vrijstaat Vanmol, bottle from Huis van de Geuze (linked to the brewery by family ties). Thick and foamy, frothy, cobweb-lacing, egg-white, dense head towering over a misty peach blonde beer with old gold hue and lively sparkling. Aroma of ripe banana and even banana-flavoured bubblegum, kiwi, melon, sugar loaf, honey, peach 'jenever', orange juice, gin, a whiff of cilantro, ripe Doyenné pear, freshly whipped cream, white pepper, hint of wormwood. Spritzy, fruity onset, crisp carbonation with somewhat numbing effect so even for the style a tad overcarbonated, sweet fruitiness of peach, pear, melon and a lot of banana (isoamylacetate), full and bit 'fluffy' body, soft bready malts with slight caramelly edge and honeyish residual sugar on top, growing phenolic spiciness (clove) and a whiff of coriander near the end, right before a rather leafy hop bitter effect takes over, yet remaining mild enough to leave a lot of room for the malt sweetness; very 'jenever'-like alcohol aspect in the tail, becoming rather wry and obnoxious, accentuating the hop bitterness. Sweet-fruity nose contrasting with wry-alcoholic and hoppy bitterness: your typical Flemish tripel, aimed at the masses and in that sense not badly done at all, but this brewery has produced more memorable beers. The astringent booziness especially bothered me a bit, but I maintain that the nose is enjoyable if you think of sweet, ripe, yellow fruit. Certainly not the worst in this overexposed genre - and I use 'overexposed' lightly.

Bottle from Belgiuminabox. Pours a hazy golden/amber colour with a medium sized off white head. Lots of sediment in the glass. Nice lacing. Aromas of stoney fruits, apricots, tangerines, peaches with vinous, floral and grassy notes. Taste is again quite similar to the aroma and is quite spicy and peppery on the palate with a fairly dry finish. Medium bodied with a fairly smooth oily mouthfeel. Lasting stoney fruit and spicy finish. Not too sweet or too bitter it is nicely balanced. The taste is better than the aroma. Nice flavours. Good beer.
