A rich, regal Porter from 1926
REVIVING THE REIGN OF PORTER
1926 was a special year for Great Britain - a certain Princess Elizabeth was born. On the occasion of her 90th birthday, we went back through our old brew books to find a recipe from her birth year - and we found a Porter fit for a Queen

Bottle. Dark brown with a light tan head that fades to a fat coat. Aroma of chocolate, soft dark brown sugar, bread, some dark berries. Quite light bodied for a strongish English beer (I guess that’s the between the wars thing). Lovely lowish carbonation. Berries and light roast are more prominent than the chocolate and it’s quite bitter at the finish. Not all that sweet and the finish is pretty dry. Engaging and dangerously quaffable.

Bottle:Deep amber coloured with a ruby sheen, small persistent off-white head; moderate to distinctive, but soft, roasty nose with lots of dark dried fruits, shy traces of peat and some subdued chocolate; moderate to solid - not too dry - bitter-sweet flavour, nearly full bodied, pretty smooth; lingering bitter-sweet fruity and toasty-malty finish with a delicate touch of warming alcohol in the aftertaste. Another goody, brewed in Chiswick...

Bottle. Dark brown beer with ruby shades, good creamy foam. Aroma: citrus and fruit notes, fruity esters, rich maltiness, roasted malt, shades of coffee and chocolate. Taste: port wine, velvet body, dark chocolate and coffee, a drop of brandy, fruits, heating finish decorated with soft hop bitterness. Silky and pleasant.

Bottle from Rudat. Brown dark caramelly beginning. Intense, round and voluminous. Roasted brown sugars, moderate bitterness, intense and smooth. Moderate roasted bitter aftertaste with (probably too much) brown sugars, making it not too complex, but round and smooth nice.

Bottled 500ml. -from Pivoteka Zagreb. Almost black coloured, small brownish head, mild chocolate in the nose. Light roasted malt, chocolate, oatmeal, some licorice and caramel with dry finish. Nothing thrilling here.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Near black with small-mid sized off white head. Plum brandy, raisins and licorice up front. Sweet with full body and rounded mouthfeel. Grainy with molasses, aniseed and dates. Drying saké-like finish with minerally bitterness. Complex with lots off flavours, yet a bit diluted. Really torn about this beer - could pass as decent or fabulous depending on my mode.
