Belgian-Style Pale Ale

A pale-gold hued ale, fermented with a Belgian yeast strain, resulting in a beer that has notes of lemon citrus from the hops, and black pepper spice from the yeast, with a dry “tingly” finish.

On draft at ChurchKey DC during the Craft Brewers Conference. Pours a clear gold with an off white head. Aroma of orange with bread yeast. Flavors of orange zest and cardamon. Nice saison.

500mL can, sent from khoffman43 (thanks Kyle), pours a clear golden / copper with a medium white head. Nose is florally and yeasty, with fresh meadows, light fruity notes (apricot and peach), and some bready, crackery malts. Flavour is fairly wild, with some rustic saison notes, but also modernized tasting, with English bready malts, dry grassy notes, some spicy floral hops and black pepper on the finish. The spice and dry grassy notes end this one off, creating a very refreshing and smooth mouthfeel. Doesn't really strike me a saison, at least certainly not a traditional one. Solid stuff for what it is.

Can - thanks Kyle! Pours clear golden amber with a large white head that leaves a bit of lacing. Aroma of grain, honey, fruit and yeast notes. Flavor is about the same, lightly spicy/peppery and stronger fruit notes. Medium sweet, lightly bitter dry grassy finish.

Can. Malty nose, bread, lemon, honey, a big of cabbage, corn and metal. Malty, bready lavor, some lemon. Sweet, not very complex. A bit plain, and not much of a saison, really.

Can from my Summer Secret Santa. Dar golden color with small white head. Aroma of malt, honey, grain, yeast, spices. Taste, honey, yeast, citrus, malt, grapefruit zest, spices, bitter hops. Nice spicy bitter finish. This is really tasty.

Refrigerated 16 oz. can from JoePeesie poured into a shaker. Pours translucent deep golden with fluffy off-white head. Little lacing, medium/thick body, medium carbonation, syruypy texture, and light malt aroma. Taste is full floral malt, some corn, some pepper, hint of honey, with a crisp hop finish. I don’t know what style I would call this, but saison didn’t come to mind.

Canned Saison. Since its Surly, I’ll go with it. Spicy and yeasty, with a peppery middle and a wheat and grass laced finish. The flavors never achieve much depth, however, as the brisk carbonation clears the palate too quickly. Finishes mild and yeasty. Not a bad beer, but far from fulfilling my occasional Saison jones.

16 oz. Can, Thanks to Tripplebrew. Slightly hazy gold in a snifter, steady carbonation gives a ½ head that’s stays until the last sip. A traditional like taste for a saison. Peppery, Belgian like yeast, with a grassy floral hop. Light to no bitterness at all. This was my 1st ever Surly beer, I’m really happy I got several more to try! Thanks a ton Tripplebrew!
