Hop: Magnum, Cascade, Simcoe, Mosaic

Sampled from bottle @ RBBWG 2018, hosted by Beerlovers Bar, Antwerp. Clear golden color, average sized white head. Smell and taste lightly malts, lightly yeast, apple peel, moderately bitter. Average to decent body, medium carbonation. Ok.

12 April 2018. From tap at Le Trappiste, Bruges.
Presented to me as an IPA by the bartenders - quod non, apparently. Pours hazy ochre with a diminishing, frothy, white head; some lacing. The aroma contains overripe banana, lemon, mandarin, mango, some grapefruit, grass & hay, onion, herbs, dash of pepper. It tastes light lemony sour and light to medium hoppy bitter, bit spicy with a constant malty undertone. Hoppy, herbal and a slight peppery finish. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Does have some IPA qualities, interesting brew at least.

The craft beer buzz in Ghent has recently produced yet another ‘bierfirma’ (gypsy brewer): De Mederie, presenting this saison as their first beer, already available in several pubs throughout the city. Medium thick, egg-white, moussy, stable head leaving behind papery lacing, over a misty peach blonde beer with ochre hue. Surprisingly ‘dank’ aroma, hints of overripe mango, raw turnip, ‘old hop urine’, herb cheese, sweat, withering kitchen herbs, shallot or pearl onions, peach, wet marijuana, soggy old bread, green pear, moldy old oranges. Fruity, estery onset, peachy with hints of banana and pineapple, sweetish but restrainedly so with a sourish undercurrent, medium carbonation fit for the style, fluffy mouthfeel; pleasantly bready, rounded malt sweetish middle, bit cereally with ongoing esters and developing spicy phenols on top. Finishes earthy, dry and hoppy, with a somewhat grapefruity and peppery hop bitterness, aromatic retronasally but in a ‘dank’ way (sweat, onions, marijuana) and a bready yeastiness, a little bit on the ‘dirty’ side but that is perfectly fine – or even desirable – for a saison as far as I’m concerned. Very modern, up to date, American-influenced interpretation of an old Belgian style; I like the cartoonish label too. Good start indeed - though brewing at Alvinne, the house style of which I cannot recognize here, maybe could have opened more opportunities to go all the way and produce a fully Anglo-Saxon style 'wild' farmhouse ale; in this form, Grizzly is perhaps closer to a (Belgian) IPA than a saison in any of the different present day meanings. Apparently this beer was meanwhile taken over by Heroes Amazing Beer and integrated into their portfolio as Super Saison...

Bottle thnx to Jorre himself ! Always liek it when brewers proudly give me their beer :) Pours medium clear, bit darker side of blonde. Medium white head, rather creamy in texture. very stable. Smell is phenolic, but not the saison-typical pepper-like phenols. Mild hay. Taste is sharp, bitter, hay, phenols ( still, more 'spiced' and complex, than the typical peppery notes ) perhaps a tad too much phenols, drying the palate out, and pulling it towards the bandaid side. Don't get me wrong, the beer isn't off as it is ( at all ) but it could benefit from less phenols (perhaps a tad lower fermentation temp might do the trick) Body is average, and carbo is average ( or low-average in style, but I actually prefer it like this ) . Hoppyness gives an interesting touch, but it's not very hop-forward in general. Overall, a nice first beer, I am fully convinced the next ones will be even better.

Bottle sample @ RBBWG Mar 10h. 2018, thanks 77ships.
