Pours fairly clear blonde. Small white head. Scent is mostly wine barrel, funk, no real cherry. Taste is sharp, acidic, full on woody. No real cherry. Very high carbo. Medium body.

Dulle Teve or – excusez le mot – ‘Mad Bitch’, Dolle’s standard tripel, macerated on cherries, an experiment carried out two years ago; apparently only two kegs were made, the second and last one being served at Billie’s Craft Beer Fest. Medium thick, egg-white, open and loosely structured head, misty deep apricot golden robe with salmon-pinkish tinge – but not actually red like one would expect from any cherry beer. Aroma does not really breathe fresh cherries, rather cherries that have been steeped in liquor for a long time (and I mean that in the most delicate way – an experiment in that sense I once made as a young man in my grandmother’s house sprung to mind), gooseberry jelly, oxidized white wine, green grapes, wet clay, unripe pineapple, apple peel, madera, fruit yoghurt, kiwi. Fruity onset alright: sweet and tart at the same time, some cherry perhaps but equally strongly reminiscent of apple, white grape and gooseberry, medium carb, smooth but full body; bready-sweetish malt core under ongoing fruit tartness and sweetness, but bizarrely grapes come to mind more often and more clearly than cherries, even in the finish; ends fruity, gently tart, very vinous and warming. Excellent DDB beer for sure, actually reminiscent of the Dulle Teve Riserva which was released earlier this year, but I really wonder how exactly it was made; if I had not been informed that cherries actually went in here, I would never have picked them out, at least not in the particular circumstances of that busy day at the Waagnatie… Least kriek-like kriek I ever had, probably, but also one of Dolle’s most fascinating beers.
