Originally, a curious mistake that resulted in an all-new-beer-style we liked to call…Irresponsible. We’ve upgraded this Sweet Release with the addition of Whole Cane Sugar for a delightfully unrefined experience.
Unrefined Shugga’ is our winter-warming, holidaze BarleyWine, clocking in at 10% alc./vol. It’s chockfull of malted barley, malted wheat, Munich malt, and crystal malts, then generously dry-hopped with Simcoe, Columbus, Cascade, and Centennial hops. Unrefined Shugga’ gets its name from the addition of whole cane Panela sugar. It’s basically the holidays in a glass.

Pretty darn nice for a big, burly barleywine, offering up loads of caramel, cane sugar, orange marmalade, and a little custard, with a moderate piney bitterness on the back end and lingering notes of sugarcane and candied citrus zest. Tasty.

Pours clear, deep amber into a tulip. White conglomerate head with good retention recedes leaving no lacing. Hot caramel, molasses and pine aromas. Thick with sour, earthy pit fruit, hot caramel and overripe tropical fruit upfront turning to dry, earthy pine resin and bark finish.

Bottle from Livonia Liquor. Pours a clear copper/amber color with a finger of beige head that lingers. Toasted caramel, citrus and pine on the nose. Palate is similar without being overly boozy. Balanced finish with slight warming alcohol, pine, caramel and grapefruit.

12 oz bottle. Largely clear amber pour with an off-white head. Not much in the aroma at first, just a distant caramelly spiciness. As it warms, I pick up more caramel, along with dark fruit and molasses, but the aroma is still pretty light for the ABV. Flavor is toasty malt, caramel, molasses, dark fruit, with some herbal and spicy hops. Still kind of light for its strength, but pretty good.

I bought yesterday this 12 oz bottle, cooled off and ready to sample this evening. Because it is Lagunitas and because, from the label, it comes from a different direction. Cane sugar? A globe glass get the honor of the pour, I see a light caramel colored liquid with a taupe skim. The smell gives not much away, I get malt, bread and a bit of sweetness. A drink is inline with the scent, definitely an American ale with its distinct basic beer taste and biscuit, straw, grain, syrup and pecans. Okay, even interesting, but I expected something uplifting.

The aromas are a pleasant blend of caramel, toffee with a little roast and fruit. Flavors are an interesting twist on the aromas with caramel coming out a little stronger along with sweet at first going towards heavier bitter and then sweet again. Full body good carbonation.
