Tap pour at Eric the Red. Shared by vinivini. Aroma is dried fruits, dates, malt. Taste is medium sweet, dried fruits, molasses. Indeed quite Belgianesque.

Opaque dark brown. Small ivory head. Aroma: fruit esters, malts, vinous notes. Full body. Average carbonation. Taste: fairly fruity, estery, light to medium sweet. In a blind tasting I would guess for a Belgian strong dark ale. Still it tasted well.

Can. A black barleywine with candied fruits? Catnip to a beer geek like me! Opaque dark brown beer, good pale tan head. Smooth and slightly soft palate, decent fine carbonation. Smooth sweet dark malts, good dose of semi sweet dark chocolate. Trace of sweet coffee liqueur. Mellow candy fruits. Touch of alcohol spice. Smooth and rich but if you told me this was an Impy, I would believe you!

440ml can at Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury whilst reading a 1996 issue of NME. Pours pitch black, good tan topping. Aroma has a nice rich sweetness with myriad molasses, liquorice and dried fruit notes. Taste delves a little deeper, lovely slick mouthfeel, beautifully balanced with a gentle apricot sweetness running throughout. Excellent dark barley wine, hugely enjoyable, and eminently drinkable. Good stuff!

Enorm moutig, bijna weeïg. Wat roast, gedroogd fruit, maar vooral karamel en weeïge mout. Licht scherpe alcohol. Eigenlijk vrij matig

Can. Black brown pour. Aroma of malt, candy and some booze. Taste has yeast ester, burned malt, bitter candy, booze and glue. Boozy glue finish. I don't get the meaning of this, what was this supposed to be? Bad beer.

Dark barleywine with candied fruit, can from De Bierkoning in Amsterdam, shared on the train ride to Lelystad with Craftmember, Goedele and Antonia. Collab of two of Western Europe's best young craft breweries, seems like nothing can go wrong here... Mousy, quite tightly lacing, medium thick, stable, yellowish pale beige head, very dark caramel brown beer with warm bronze-mahogany hue. Aroma of candied plum, marmalade, butterscotch, brown rum, raisins, cola, soy sauce, coffee powder, toffee, hay. Sweet onset with a light sourish edge, lots of sweet raisin and candied fig, hint of ripe blue grape somewhere as well as a vague soy sauce-like umami accent; medium carb, full and vinous, bit resinous mouthfeel. Hard caramelly and pecan-nutty middle, sweet but with a bittering, toasty edge; old raisin, liquorish and coffee powder accents in the finish with spicy, grapefruity hops, as boasted on the can, still being apparent, acquiring a somewhat marmalade-like character due to them being drenched in sweet maltiness. Very pleasantly (citrusy) hopped indeed, rich and bittersweet but somehow surprisingly dry in the mouth based on what one would expect from the primarily sweet nose - quite a surprising, complex, well-crafted and 'artistic' beer, worthy of both its parents' quality status.
