4 Times in a Rye, 4 types of Rye. For this beer we used Rye malt, Toasted Rye malt, Chocolate Rye malt en unmalted Rye.

The idea was to make a Black New Engeland Rye IPA. To problem with the way we work is that our labels need to be finished before the beer is bottled or canned. I can tell you it's a smooth Black Rye IPA, but the New England part was more difficult then expected in this one.

The result is a pitch black rye IPA, with a creamy body, alot of spicyness from the ryemalts and a soft bitterness with a dry aftertaste.

We are not 100% sure, but we think that we are the first one in Belgium to brew a 100% rye beer :D!

Enjoy!

Fast receding cream-beige head over reddish black-brown beer. Caramel, molasses @ pouring; chalk, sweet roast. Bread with cassonade sugar. Liquorice, intense at onset, in the end followed by some roast and some less specific sweetness. Cardboard, syrupy breadspread. Warming up a bit, finally a very modeste acidity lends some cautious depth. Bit sticky, yet only medium bodied at best; soft carbonation and creaminess, indeed referring to the rye. BLACK: yes, it is, NEW ENGLAND, since that means opaque, OK. But this is as much IPA as Pepsi would be IPA. Such a shame, as judicious choice of hops can make black IPA wonderful. Txs to Stef!

Can from Beers@Moviefun. Hazy black, thin, beige head. Aroma of mango, pineapple, grapefruit peel, prune, old walnut, chocolate powder, brown bread. Taste has sweet mango, pineapple & prune in a toasty, nutty, brown-bready malt body with a sourish citrus accent. Piney & resinous hoppy finish, lingering citrus and soft fondant. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Not bad an attempt but doesn't feel fresh.

Very dark brown. Pours extremely viscously, strangely so. Fine carbonation. Slightly unusual taste. Malty, grainy but not particularly roasted or burnt. Bitter in a floral way. Has an almost stale, old taste.

New Galea beer, a black IPA brewed with rye and deliberately kept hazy and low in IBU in order to convey a NEIPA element; from tap at Bar Beenhouwer. Medium thick, dense, yellowish-beige, closed and stable head, blackish robe with burgundy edges. Aroma of wet toast, soap, liquorish, indeed spicy grey rye bread dough, pine resin but also hints of old potatoes and cooked green kale – DMS, in other words, growing somewhat stronger when the beer warms up. Cleanish onset, restrained in sweetness, some fresh fig and raisin notes, touch of blackcurrant perhaps; medium carb, smooth body. Soft nutty malt core, brown bread and indeed recognizable rye spiciness and ‘graininess’, while at the same time a somewhat annoying soapiness hangs around, distracting from the core intentions of this beer; roasty-bitter notes in the end along with leafy, slightly piney and fruity hop bitterness, but the latter remains much too soft and lacking in aromatics to make this beer qualify as a true ‘Cascadian’, not even a New England one if this is to be interpreted as a more aromatic and less bitter, hazy version of ‘true’ BIPA. Too bad: I still love a well-made black IPA, but here in Europe, where the style is generally poorly understood, most attempts are balanced too much to the malty side and not nearly enough to the hoppy side, ending up with what are basically hoppy porters and stouts. This one has that very problem too, even with its New England intentions – perhaps Galea would have made a better choice opting for a ‘classic’ BIPA instead.

29/I/22 - on tap @ Bar Beenhouwer (Gent), BB: n/a (2022-117)

Clear dark brown beer, small creamy beige head, unstable. Aroma: very complex, roasted, malty, grains, spicy, oxidized, honey, dry, some caramel, fruity notes. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: alcohol up front, bit sourish, pretty weird, roasted, spicy, bitter hops. Aftertaste: fruity, more of that acidity, weird, roasted, dry and spicy finish, good, but not a black IPA.

Pours a clear (but un-seetrough by the intensity) very dark brown-to-black - just a hint of a red glow. Medium sized, stable, off-white head. Scent is very full, intense bready/spicy notes by the rye. Hops are way to mild for an IPA, but man, what do I like having an outspoken rye beer. Can we make this the next hype? Taste is very full, intense spicyness by the rye. Mild bitterness -the beer isn't going super smooth between it's elements. Higher Co2, bit of a soapy mouthfeel. surely a let-down after the beautifull nose.
