Hailed by the late beer writer Michael Jackson as ‘one of the great characters of the beer world’, Abbot Ale is brewed for quality of the highest order. Abbot is an irresistible ale with masses of fruit characters, a malty richness and superb hop balance. It is brewed longer to a unique recipe, which makes it the full-flavoured, smooth and mature beer it is today.

Bottle from Tesco dot com. It pours clear rich brown with a small beige head. The aroma is earthy, damp wood, nutty, brown bread, rivita, touch of toffee and dried leaves. The taste is dry, slightly bitter, earthy, twiggy, woody, leafy, cardboard, toasted spice, nuttiness, brown bread and old leather sofa with a brown bready finish.. average body and average carbonation. A bit twiggy, but drinks fine. Unsurprisingly not as good as on cask.

Cask @ JDW Shrewsbury Hotel. Deep amber appearance, small off-white head. Good rich caramel action here, lovely clarity of flavour, excellent condition. Decent.

500ml bottle from Stonemanor, The British Store near Brussels. F: medium, tan, average retention. C: amber, clear. A: toast, caramel, bready, nutty. T: medium malty base, light toast, nutty, bready, decent bitterness, soft carbonation, easy drinkable, ok for the style yet nothing memorable.

Bottle from my local off-licence ‘Wine Rack’. Pours a clear copper colour with a thin off-white head. Aromas of caramel, biscuits and toasty bread. Taste is caramel, fruit cake and peppery spice. Malty with a subtle earthy hop on the finish. Nicely balanced. Medium body with a smooth slightly oily mouthfeel. Decent enough.

Pint on cask at the Hain Line JDW. I can't believe I've not ticked this. Medium creamy white head clear light Amber pour. Light bitterness.

Non nitro can. Bright orangish amber with a coat of pale beige head. Aroma of stone and citrus fruit, spices. Less marmalade-like in the taste mainly because the bitterness is a bit higher than you'd guess from the aroma. Lacks a welcoming texture, but not bad at all.

Very tan head stayed on a reddish brown still body. Sweet & malt aroma. Medium bodied, tingly with a clean back. Sweet jam, berries, malt, caramel & lightly hopped tastes.

Bottle from Asda. Pours clear amber, small white head but minimal retention and no lacing. Roasted malts and stone fruit aroma. Taste is a disappointing watered down version of the aroma, more like tea with a bit of biscuit. Lightish body and moderate carbonation. Average.

A British classic, looks like an old fashioned British beer and by Jove tastes like one! Pours a deep, clear amber, approaching brown colour, with a frothy white head. The aroma sits in between fruity and malty, with a certain sweetness to it, and that sensation carries on into the flavour, with a nice amount of bitterness in the finish to round it off. A relatively heavy beer, with a creamy mouthfeel and a nice blend of flavours.
