Grand Cru started out as The Sultan. When we made this beer last year I filled 8 old Pinot Noir barrels and more or less forgot about it. To further enhance the funky character, I blended it with 2 barrels of a Flanders Red kinda thing, that has also been fermenting funky for about 18 months.

Bottle. Hazy ruby color with white head. Aroma is wood, tobacco, maltose, quite subtle. Taste is oak, wood, surprisingly dry, just a tiny bit of sourness. Full-bodied, great stuff.

2011 37.5 cl bottle aged ever since. Gusher allert. Pours muddy dark redbrown, foam dissapears instantly. Smell and taste confirm the fear : this beer is infected. Acidic, glue-notes over a barrel aspect with mild background sticky chocolaty sweetness. Even though the beer is said to be sour and funky on the bottle, this tastes like infection, more so than a desired tartness by spontaeous fermentation, or even kettle sour or sour mash' this beer is off. They did a good job packing it as a specialty, selling it as a desires aspect of the beer. but it's not. The tastes don't really work together, kinda clash' still drinkable, but not very enjoyable.

375ml bottle shared. Very excited to find an old bottle of this at the Lumsden, and pretty reasonably priced considering the age. Huge aroma with a bunch of sultanas, cinnamon spiciness, sherry, tartness, cherries and altogether fantastic. Flavour is dried fruit, red wine vinegar, spice, cherries, sultanas. Big tartness, big sweet fruitiness. This is just huge flavour, and thereβs still all manner of stuff I couldnβt pick out. Hugely complex and crazy delicious.

375ml bottle. Cloudy dark amber colour with small, micropored, creamy, fully lasting, beige head. "Rumtopf" aroma, notes alcohol soaked dried fruit, raisin, sultanine, some chocolate, a spicy touch of blue cheese, an alcoholic whiff. All flavours are reproduced in taste, warming alcoholic finish.

37,5 cl bottle @ home
Aroma is somewhat tart and vinous with red wine and woody tones. Flavour has red wine, vinegar, woody tones, some ripe fruits, tartish cherries and berry juice. Feels a bit thin and watery for this ABV. This has something in common with HOTD/Deschutes Collage. I would not recognize this as abt/quad.

Pours dark reddish brown with a small head. Aroma of tart berries, vinous notes, wood, oak, plums, ripe fruits and loads of malts. Taste is smooth, warming, sweetish and woody with plums, ripe fruits, bretta, vinous notes and funky yeastiness. Finish is funky, sweetish and syrupy with notes of bretta, red wine, oak, tartness and ripe fruits. Quite nice and complex. Iβd categorize this as a sour red/brown instead of abt/quadrupel though.

0.375l bottle brought home from 2d2dspuma. Gusher alert! It's most definitely cloudy this, near what can be described as murky. Not just brown in color, it's also slightly reddish/rusty and it has a small at first foamy, eventually islandy beige head on the top. It has so many nuances of different things on the nose this. Mainly it's tart woody with a little vinegar hint but it's also build up by lots of different types of sweet and tart fruits. Superbly complex! There's dark dates, prunes, lots of salty Linton berries and black currants. I get malt vinegar and white whine grapes. Chocolate is also detected here, the dark and really dry kind. Yeah, a superbly complex nose indeed and I really like it. It's way to aggressive on the carbonation this! Definitely over carbonated and it has a shockingly thin and near watery feeling in the mouth. That's a bit of a downer. The taste is quite nice though. Definitely not your average whatever this is. A quad? Well.. Tastes slightly infected, lots of sour white currants and slightly sharp white vine vinegar. It's really tasty though. Red salty and tart Linton berries, lots of slightly mouthdrying wood. Traces of cocoa and chocolate wrapper in the finish. Lots and lots of flavor. The abv is quite elegantly masked, even if it feels surprisingly light in the mouth. Yeah, I quite enjoyed this strange but really complex creation. 13.09.2014
