‘Dark India Bock’ from this modern craft brewery in the historical brewing city of Bamberg, Germany – a confusing description because ‘dark India Bock’ is not a style denomination I encountered before, so for the time being, I will assume this is a Dunkelbock hopped the ‘new’ American way, which does not say a lot either (especially when considering that traditional Bock beers are never hop-forward but always malt-forward)… Anyway: can at Bar Beenhouwer. Medium thick, moussy, pale yellowish beige, stable head, deep dark bronze-brown robe with coppery glow, translucent and clear. Aroma of brown bread crust, dry autumn leaves, moist toasted onion, rosehip, tea, ‘drop’, old walnuts, hard caramel, hints of coffee grounds, nutmeg, black pepper and dry leather. Dry onset, some dried fig and dried blueberry notes, light leathery umami accents, softish carb, slick and oily body; ‘clean’ brown-bready, hard-caramelly and eventually toasty-bitter maltiness carrying a leafy, bit oniony, peppery hop bitter note on its tail, accentuating the toasty part. Long, herbal, bitter and dry, slightly earthy finish. IPL in a dark way, though not black and indeed still looking like a dunkler Bock – yet not tasting like one, as this beer is much hoppier and also toastier than the average dunkler Bock. Whatever it is – just think ‘postmodern hoppy dark lager’ and you will be fine – this is a very tasty, solid and well-crafted beer, and one I would not mind revisiting next time at Bar Beenhouwer.

Dunkler, hopfig-malziger Beginn. Schokolade, mild röstig, weiche Herbe. Konstant malzig aber auch hopfig bleibend, süffig, dennoch vollmundig. Cremig malziger Abgang, steigend hopfig, langer Nachgeschmack. Gut! 8/12/12/12/10/12

Büchsla: Deep chestnut-amber coloured, hazy, medium-sized and slowly collapsing off-white head, moderate to solid bitter-sweet aroma of piney hops and bitter chocolate, traces of toasted malt well detectable; moderate to solid bitter-sweet flavour, medium bodied; lingering bitter-sweet finish with dry hops and a distinctive balancing (dark-) malty sweetness. Pretty pleasant sip...

Can picked up from Bierkiste München and consumed at home Tuesday 15th February 2022 listening to Black Country New Road - Ants from up Here, cooking Chilli con Carne. Nice steady hoppy thrust with a streaky malty presence, caramel and a little chocolate. The strength and drinkability are spot on, the hoppiness is measured. This is lovely, and after a couple of wayward beers from Blech Brut lately this seems them right back on track.

Can Hazy red, golden cream. Strong gooseberry and grass hop notes, initially a bit hopburny/solvent-like, on chocolate roast malt. Medium body, mellow, dry, chewy. Roast and caramel, lightly singed, broad grassy, herbal, fruity hop profile - seems agressive at first but finds its balance soon. Intense but easy to sip.
