Puur LeFort, maar dan 'oak aged'
In januari 2020 legde Brouwerij Omer Vander Ghinste 65 hectoliter van haar donkere LeFort op eikenhouten foeder XXI en liet het 22 maanden rijpen. Die lange rijping op hout geeft het bier een aangename zurigheid en een bijna wijnachtige smaak. De opvallende smaakevolutie is enkel en alleen te danken aan de lange maturatie. Geen toevoegingen, geen blends, dit is puur LeFort, maar dan 'oak aged'.
LeFort Barrel Aged is een uniek degustatiebier met een mooie donkerrode tot roodbruine kleur. De geur is licht zurig met houttoetsen en aroma’s van rood fruit. Hout en rood fruit herken je ook in de smaak, aangevuld met wat karamel. Dit sterke donkere bier is complex en volmondig met een licht droge afdronk.
Dit houtgerijpte bier heeft een mild zurige, bijna wijnachtige smaak. Een uniek staaltje brouwmeesterschap, dat fans van geuze en sour ales aangenaam zal verrassen!

Robijnrood bier, flink schuimend bij inschenken.
Aroma is fruitig en zuur.
Smaak is zuur, een beetje als kriekenbier.

Bottle from AH Jan Linders supermarket, batch year 2022, 13 months aged in oak foeders. Color: Clear amber to copper, frothy beige head. Aroma: Malty, tart, caramel. Like Flemish Brown Ale. Taste: Tart, Balsamico vinegar, dark malt, caramel, oak wood notes, some candy sugar. Very light bitterness, medium tartness, light sweetness. Medium body, average carbonation. Dry-ish finish. Ok but a bit unbalanced in my opinion.

75cl bottle (13 months in the barrel, batch 2022, BBF: 11/07/29) from Colruyt Etterbeek Jourdan in Brussels. F: big, tan, good retention. C: red amber to brown. A: apples, blackcurrant, woody, caramel, red wine. T: full malty base, blackcurrant, black grapes, red wine, apples, woody, nice balanced tannins, decent bitterness, medium carbonation, right before I have had Rouge Max and it had also 3,42 here but this is much way better, enjoyed for sure.

Clear red brown beer, small creamy beige head, unstable, a bit adhesive. Aroma: weird, sourish, a bit soapy, floral, wood notes, some tannins. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet and sugary, some alcohol, dried fruits, acidic, more dried fruits, bitter. Aftertaste: dry, spicy, soft acidity, bitter, hoppy, dried fruits, more yeast, lots of alcohol burning afterwards in the throat.

The dark LeFort aged in the brewery’s own lambic barrels used for the Jacobins brand, a new LeFort variant now exclusively distributed through the Colruyt supermarket chain in 75 cl bottles. Thin and open, pale beige, small-bubbled head, misty caramel brown robe with amberish-ruddy glow. Aroma of hard caramel, passionfruit, sour cherries, medlar, wet oak wood, lightly toasted brown bread, blackcurrant, sour cream, green apple, old dry red wine, vague hint of balsamic vinegar. Fruity onset, tart with a sweet core, hinting at blue grape, blackcurrant and crabapple, fizzily carbonated with full, smooth mouthfeel; caramelly, brown-bready and somewhat walnutty malt core, sweetish but dried by lactic tartness in a gentle, elegant way. Ends a bit vinous, with tart ‘dark’ fruitiness lingering about and a dash of herbal hoppiness but remaining low in bitterness; tannins from the wood are also present, and all is bound together by a warming but non-astringent, pleasantly soothing afterglow of calvados-like alcohol. Feels like a strong ‘oud bruin’ or even ‘versnijbier’ in its combination of dark malts, wood and lactic sourness; bears a certain resemblance to the legendary Liefmans Goudenband. The barrel treatment has effectively lifted a rather mediocre strong Belgian dark ale to a higher, Flemish red-like level; worth seeking out (and probably a great beer for long-term cellaring as well).
