Stone 12th Anniversary Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout aged 7 months in American Oak Kentucky Bourbon Barrels
Originally inspired by recipes of two Team Stone members, Stone 12th Anniversary Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout became an instant classic. The onyx-hued beer also proved to be an ideal barrel-aging specimen, thanks to its rich, thick mouthfeel and chocolate-heavy flavors and aromatics.
An already magnificent beer’s mouthwatering recipe of unsweetened chocolate, flaked oats and dark-roasted malts is made even more deliciously complex care of oak barrels that previously nurtured bourbon. These amazing vessels impart oak and coconut-like flavors upfront while accentuating the silky smooth midpalate with oak vanillin notes. The finish is long and intense, with layers of chocolate and oak vanillin. You might be tempted to lick the glass for every last drop of this delectable adult confection.

From bottle, thnx to Eric. Pours black , decent size, bit darker head. Smell is intense roasty, some bitter cocoa. Very hidden barrel notes. Taste is full, intense, cocoa, vanilla and more of the bourbon. Roasted malts. Somewhat creamy. Bit of alcohol. Decently low carbo. Some cocoa towards the end.

Bottle. They sure made an effort to make 500ml look big. Black with a brown head that fades to a coat in short order. Aroma of heavy roast, shiraz, chocolate, pine, vanilla-tinged whisk(e)y. 8- Sadly, it’s more clearly Bourbon in the taste and it’s a bit intrusive rather than spectrum-broadening. But the chocolate is nice, the firm but never burnt roasted presence Stone does so well is there and the bitterness is firm enough to provide a full stop. That shiraz character is only just there - maybe it would have developed into something Moa IS-like. Good.

Pours a viscous, neverending black with a heavy dark brown head giving off crazy lace. The nose hits with a strong burst of bourbon followed by a chocolate milk back. First sip smacks the palate with boozy warmth, but the sweetness quickly shows through, leading to a deep, rich burst of chocolate-covered fig and a rummy undertone. Grows hot as the liquor and oak round out the finish, with a touch of vanilla balancing the bitter fade. Delicious.

500 ml bottle. Pitch black with thin tan head that died fast. Aroma is heavy on Oak as expected. Light dark chocolate, mild booze.
Flavor follows the aroma. Booze is obvious with a slight burn after the sip. I probably opened this too soon. I should’ve let it mellow. But on that point the bourbon character is very low anyhow. Body is full and thick as it should be. Chewy
