Our piney, dank, and mind-bending East Coast IPA is a huge part of Blue Point's history. As Long Island's original IPA, it is often the first IPA of many local drinkers who pass the love for this crushable IPA from generation to generation.
Hoptical Illusion's malt-forward body and piney hop kick have landed it 4 notable awards, including a GABF medal.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 9/1/2015. Pours slightly hazy golden orange color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, light honey, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/piney hops and moderate bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, light honey, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon/orange peel, citrus rind, pine, light honey/bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness, complexity, and balance of citrus/piney hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Good amount of dryness from bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp/resinous/sticky, and slightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice IPA style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/piney hops and moderate bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

35 cl bottle broght over from Manhattan, NY. Astonoshing psychedelic packaging. Deep dark golden to amber color, clear, short thick offwhite head, lacing. Fresh smell of hops. Aroma: grapefruit, pine, fruity esters and resins (ananas, passion fruit, mango, apricot), citrus, caramel malts. Balanced taste, bitter finish. Medium body, thick creamy texture, soft carbonation, fairly dry finish a bit sticky. Nice and clean american ipa, very tasty, loved it.

This was poured into a nonic pint glass.
The appearance was a soft bronzed burnt brown color with a slim transparency about it. Carbonation rises at a nice pace. A one finger white foamy head dissipated within less than a minute. Lacing clung nicely in a mild filmy foamy manner.
The smell had some earthy and grassy hops rolling over a light herbal quality and having a nice caramel backbone to it.
The taste copied the smell and added a light tobacco in the aftertaste and finish.
On the palate, this one sat fairly dry with an okay sessionability about it. Carbonation felt right as an IPA. Bitterness seemed decent.
Overall, I don’t mind it for me, but there’s a part of me that wants to say this is closer to an English IPA because of the way the hops come across and the smell and flavor. I could see myself having this again.

Bottle. A clear, golden beer topped by a white head. The aroma is lightly fruity, with grainy malts and some citrusy hops. It’s full-bodied and nicely carbonated, semi-dry, with a too solid malty backdrop. Decent bitterness, citrusy hops and a generic fruityness too. Rather short finish. Nothing impressive going on here, it drinks easily but fails to impress in any way. 150624

Pours a hazy amber from a bottle. Aroma is a pine soap, almost Pine-Sol-y. Flavor has some of that pine resin, some bitterness, some full mouthfeel maltiness. Not a bad beer.

Bottle. Trade with Leighton. Cheers. Hazy, dark gold. Thin, messy, sticky, white head. Looks good. Grainy, toffee malts. Fusty, and a bit dank, orangey hops. Taste is biscuit sweet, then light, pithy bitter. Bit of hop oiliness on the palate. Finishes long, moderate bitter.
