Our piney, dank, and mind-bending East Coast IPA is a huge part of Blue Point's history. As Long Island's original IPA, it is often the first IPA of many local drinkers who pass the love for this crushable IPA from generation to generation.

Hoptical Illusion's malt-forward body and piney hop kick have landed it 4 notable awards, including a GABF medal.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 21A). Bottle 35.5 cl - Batch MW0909 (BBF unknown - bottled on 16AUG16). AROMA: medium piny and oxidized hop aroma with a dried grass/cheese note. malty background with a slight caramelized and sweet note. APPEARANCE: dark gold color and clear. medium ivory head with medium-low retention. TASTE: medium-low pine-like hop flavor with a dried grass oxidized note. malty background with a slight toffee and sweet note. medium-high bitterness with an almost dry and bitter finish. PALATE: medium-low body with medium carbonation. no astringency. OVERALL: an american IPA where the hops already have faded and started to oxidize.

Pours clear amber, OK to small white head. Smell is weak, bit malty. taste is corny, bit bitter ( bitterness builds up a bit, but stays quite weak ) . very , very mild malty aftertaste. not that much hoparoma. meh... it’s OK, but it’s very blank and weak.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Cigarette City. Appearance is clear golden orange with light sparkle, 2-finger width off-white foamy head with good retention and nice soapy lacing. Aroma is fruit, resin, citrus, earthy hops, over malty base. Taste is sweet fruit, offset by resin, earthy hops. Palate is medium bodied with slightly slippery texture, lively/spicy carbonation and bitter dominant finish. Overall, a little more to the bitter side than I’d prefer but pretty tasty.

An IPA from one of those American craft breweries that fell into the clutches of that horrible AB InBev. Medium sized, initially frothy, egg-white head eventually leaving a dense, moussy rim on the edge of the glass but dissipating into small dots of foam in the middle; lightly hazy warm orange blonde robe. Aroma of cheese crackers, biscuit, subdued dried mango, candied orange, sweet paprika powder or even some red curry, fresh toast, old dried dill, curcuma powder, white pepper, hints of dry hay, iron and lime zest - in all, not unpleasant, but certainly not the hugely aromatic New World hops profile I expect from an American IPA. Cleanly fruity onset, some dried mango and candied orange again, vague white candi sugar sweetness lingering somewhere, dim sourishness underneath, rather fizzy carbonation with very minerally effect, smooth and lightly oily mouthfeel, yet on the thin side, with even a very faint metallic touch to it somewhere halfway. Biscuity and nutty malt core in the middle while hop bitterness starts to develop on top of it, debouching into a gently but effectively bittering finish, resinous and spicy, with retronasal hints at dried grapefruit peel and curry spices; this bitterness lasts for quite a long time while traces of that biscuity malt sweetness peep through. Far from unpleasant but a bit odd, seems obsolete in this day and age; the cheese cracker-like flavor reminds me a bit of Spencer’s trappist IPA. Comes across as a bit obsolete: people expecting a fiercely aromatic hop bomb may be disappointed, though the hop certainly delivers in terms of pure flavor. Has certain English IPA-like traits in a clean, polished way without becoming overly industrial, though we are very far removed from the great American IPAs of our day and age, as created by Stone, AleSmith or small enterprises à la Trillium and Tree House. This beer, though perfectly enjoyable by itself and suitable as an introduction to the style for those who never tasted a ’new’ or international IPA before, belongs in the eighties or nineties, but seems to have little meaning in 2016. I cannot judge if AB InBev’s politics have anything to do with this, since I haven’t tasted any Blue Point beer from before they were taken over, but I would not be surprised if they have.
