This brawny, tawny ale is a savory celebration of spicy rye malt and rye whiskey, compliments of extended aging in freshly-emptied rye barrels. Rye on Rye pours a deep amber and evokes notes of charred oak and vanilla, with a finish this delightfully boozy and sweet!

A 12 oz bottle I got from Half Time, the label indicates an abv of 13.2% and 15 IBUs. Not sure what to expect, that can be why I try them. A tulip glass from a Houston brewery no longer around, I pull the cap and pour. The appearance is a mahogany brown body completed by a thin skim of tawny tan foam. The taste is interesting enough, scorched grain from the rye I assume, some bitterness, malt, syrup and a touch of dark plums. Quite dense in sensation, the alcohol shows around the edges. Good beer but not really my thing to drink again.

Quite a unique strong ale. A lively off white head on a semi-opaque deep mahogany body. The nose has medium plus prominence, featuring rye grain, rye whiskey and caramel malt. The taste emphasizes spicy rye grain along with the whiskey, oak, vanilla, a solid touch of citrus hops and a hint of mint. The caramel malt is there but less strong than most strong ales. Not too slick or sticky, especially considering the high ABV.

Deep red brown color with quick fading tan foam. Boozy aroma and matching flavor. Caramel and sweetness, whiskey taste, spicy finish with mild alcohol burn.

Tasted at November Beermalade tasting in Bratislavka. Red brown color with medium beige head. Aroma of rye, malt, roasty notes, alcohol. Taste is rye malt, whiskey, barrel, light caramel, alcohol, too much of alcohol. I would prefer less boozy beer.

Bottle at Beermalade tasting. Med-thin body, med-high perceived carbonation - amplified by really high booziness, which ventured well into the burning bothersome territory here. Med-high dried fruits, raisins. Medium spiciness. Lacking some malty support, just burning. Goodish. Enjoyable, but not too much.

12 oz bottle. Pours a clear brown with cola like head that settles quickly. Aromas of caramel, raisins, oak, rye and toasted malts. Flavours of raisin bread, sweet rye, bread crust, caramel and soft rye whiskey. Alcohol heat in finish is nice without being distracting.

12 ounce bottle. Label indicates 14.3% ABV and 33 IBU’s. Tawny mahogany brown color has reddish highlights. Brief beige head is gone in a flash. Earthy, toasted malt aroma hints at brown sugar and oak. Tangy, sweet grainy malt flavor upfront. Notes of rye whiskey and vanilla bean. Amazingly smooth and drinkable at 14.3% ABV. There is a subtle complexity that brings notes of toffee, dried fruits, preserved lemon, rye whiskey, Belgian candi sugar and oak barrel. This is categorized as a Rye / Roggenbier, but could easily be a Barleywine. Thoroughly enjoyable.
