Our legendary red ale originally brewed for a famous Reggae festival that happens each year here in Humboldt County. This mahogany hued ale brings an intense spectrum of spicy aromatic hop character balanced by a full-bodied caramel richness. 2011 Silver Medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival in the American Style Amber/Red Ale category.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of Degarth. Slightly hazy, dark amber golden with a decent, creamy, beige head leaving some lacework. Sweetish aroma of burned caramel. Medium body again with sweet flavours of burned caramel and a touch of overripe fruit. Short, dry finish. 270907

Shorter than usual brown 12 oz bottle with a twist off cap, reminds me of Seirra Nevada. Twist off the lid in a manly manner and you get a whiff of uncooked bread dough and maybe even rootbeer. When I pour it into the glass I think there is some malty roastyness. Color is hazy brownish and I am surprised to find some sludge in the bottom of the bottle, must be unfiltered. When I swirl the last bit of brew, like wit, before I pour it into the glass, pretty large bits (1/8 to 1/4 inch) come loose and go into the glass, wow! Has a bitter bite when you first taste it, malty but not hops as far as I can tell. I know that the label says its hopped but I canβt really find the hops. There is no citrus or grapefruit rind flavor that can be detected. Mind you, it is not really stoutlike or heavy porter but it does have a definable bitterness that is not hops. Carbonation is medium low. Finish leaves a lingering medium bitterness on the back of your throat. This brew does not overpower my taste buds but it is oppressive in itβs own way. Not as good as Groelsch Amber or Redhook Copperhook but just a little better than Hereford & Hops Hop Rocket Ale, Otter Creek Copper Ale, and Thirsty Dog Hoppus Maximus. Those beers are more hoppy than this. Overall a decent entry into the darker beer arena. On par with Great Divide Ridgeline but ridgeline has much better carbonation.

Murky orange-red body (very murky!), big puffy cream head. Sweet citrusy, earthy, toasty aroma. The flavor caught me off-guard at first with strong pineapple juice notes. These coexist with earthy, floral hops notes, caramel, and pear. Yeah, pear. This is a weird beer, no doubt about it. Tastes like something that should end up in a thermos or an 8 ounce cardboard container with a picture of Slimer on the front of the box. Noteworthy. Thanks Dan (jah noth) for the bottle!

The head collapsed quickly, the nose is rich of malt and caramel. This beer is very brown and opaque. The taste is nice, nutty, with the malt covering nicely the hops. Nice spicy notes throughout the tasting.

Bottled. Dark red, little head. Roasty, orangey aroma. Sweet, rather malty with soapy mouthfeel. Intenseely hoppy with lingering bitter finish. The bottle says Produce of USA. No really?! This overhopped and one-dimensional ale is like the prototype of the arrogant American ales. I like it!

Looks like I'll have to jump in to defend this substantial amber ale, with lots of malt and a good bitterness as well.
