Belgian Style - Quadrupel / Dark Strong Winter Out of Production
Score
7.29
ABV: 10.0% IBU: - Ticks: 53
Brewed in the authentic style of Belgian winter, or noel beer, is dark, strong, malty and assertively spiced. It is not a lightweight beer, and is best sipped before a roaring fire, or on a sleigh ride over the hills to Grandma’s house. (Let someone else drive.) It would also be a tasty accompaniment to dark roasts and wild game. Even with its strong ABV, this beer is well-balanced and not at all hot or fiery. The dark malts give it lush, malty flavors and aromas, strongly complemented by the five spices, including coriander, cumin, mace, cardamom and grains of paradise. Hopping is modest, as befits such a beer.

Sampled from a 750 ml brown corked bottle this beer poured a very dark brown color with a huge creamy white head that lingered forever and left great lacing. The aroma was strong dry spices - mostly nutmeg, coriander and clove with notes of dust, cherry and anise following. The flavor was tart and had a very strong nutmeg presence with strong caramel and notes of orange, cherry, berry and anise. The finish was long, dryish and spicy. Medium body. Well done.

On tap at the Stags Head. This was my sipping beer as I enjoyed a sampling of Colorado brews. pours a deep red and tastes of spice, ginger, caramel, raisins, its fizzy and some boozy warming on finish. Very nice brew for winter time.

Washington Commons, Bklyn tap ($6): Pours a reddish color with beige head. Aroma is rather spicy and fruity. The beer is actually a little thin from attempting to do too many things at once. A lot of spices, but not enough malt backbone to cover over the minor alcohol burn, which was annoying. A good amount of sweetness and plenty of fruitiness. There were even notes of what were more on the American side of hops (than on the Belgian). Not the best winter ale I’ve had.

Pour is a murky dark brown with a big tan head. Aroma is stellar. Lots of spice, Belgian yeast and a intense brown sugar. Flavor is lots of coriander and spice. Finish has more yeast and a bit of alcohol. Wonderfully flavored beer for a cold winter night. Bonus is that the place i bought this charged me half of what they should have for this beer.

750 ml bottle shared with Bryan, Dan and staff at Brasserie Beck. Decent copy of a Belgian Christmas ale, with nice spice and some sweetness. Can’t complain.

2010 bottle (with a best by of 09/2015). Pours with a murky bronze body and a very large tan head. Hugh retention and very good lace. Aromas of dried orange peel, mace, chocolate, molasses, cardamon, spiced rum, evergreen, coriander, belgian yeast esters. Definitely a strong holiday season aroma. Perfumy, Gluhwein. Flavors of cardamon, strong curaco orange, pear, attic, mulled wine (Gluhwein), estery notes, lightly woodsy. Interesting beer. Lively and creamy bubbles. Light acidity (not sourness) to the finish.

bottle at Fort Wayne tasting - Pours hazy red and smells of yeast, dark fruit, and malt. The flavor is sweet with dark fruit and spices. It’s full bodied and everything comes together well. Ommegang delivers once again with an excellent brew.

Pours light brown color with tan head. Aromas of corriander and orange peel with some other spices. Similar flavors. Medium body with average carbonation and a slight burn from the alcohol. The spices they use just don’t do ot for me. Meh.
