Belgian Style - Quadrupel / Dark Strong Winter Out of Production|

Brewed in the authentic style of Belgian winter, or noel beer, is dark, strong, malty and assertively spiced. It is not a lightweight beer, and is best sipped before a roaring fire, or on a sleigh ride over the hills to Grandma’s house. (Let someone else drive.) It would also be a tasty accompaniment to dark roasts and wild game. Even with its strong ABV, this beer is well-balanced and not at all hot or fiery. The dark malts give it lush, malty flavors and aromas, strongly complemented by the five spices, including coriander, cumin, mace, cardamom and grains of paradise. Hopping is modest, as befits such a beer.

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with an orangey head. The aroma has notes of alcohol and spices - primarily coriander, as well as lighter notes of hops. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and lots of spices - coriander, cardemomme, and more, leading to a dry bitter finish.

Pours bright mahogany into a trappist glass. Off-white head quickly recedes to skim surface. Sugar plum and nutmeg aromas. Full with upfront sweet gingerbread and a lasting allspice finish.

750 ml bottle. Deep brown body with ruby notes. Frothy tan head that diminishes to pools of small bubbles. The aroma is full of raisin, fig, plum, coriander, orange peel and anise. Slight hint of toasted malts. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly bitter and lightly acidic. It finishes moderately sweet, lightly bitter and lightly acidic. Slight tartness in the finish. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. Slight chalkiness in the finish. Tastes like an overly sweet, spiced quad with some mustiness and anise in the background. The sweetness, not quite cloying, barely leaves room for the spices which results in an odd lingering aftertaste.

Milk chocolate and cherry liqueur, aroma with cinnamon accents. Murky brown, thin yellow head. Lots of fig. Cherries are also present with an apple core finish. Alcohol obvious. Sweet and tart, but the bitterness doesn’t fit. I really didn’t get any of the spices. Pleasantly aromatic, but not all that terrific tasting.

Shared a bottle with friends at the Ginger Man in NYC. Pours a dark, ruby-brown with puffy off-white head. Aroma of spices with notes of sweet malts. Flavor is a rich complexity of sweet, dark fruits and spiciness, along with a thick, sugary palatte. Body is almost syrupy. Finish is sweet and mildly warming. Overall quite delicious.
