Classic ’versnijbier’ (blend of top-fermented ale with lambic, in this case) with a long history, once taken over from the eponymous brewery by De Neve and later by (then) Interbrew, then discontinued and now again made, but by Frank Boon. This rating concerns the old InBev version. Snow white, delicate foam, colour warm amber. Sweet malts paired with lambic acidity, in a restrained way, like in a sweetened ’capsulekensgeuze’ or a bottled faro; refreshing sweet and sour taste, lambic character subdued (very little funkiness or woodiness but still a citrussy and lactic acidity), bit sugary, but enjoyable and thirst-quenching nonetheless.

Better than the current version. Flat, no carbonation. Sweet, malty but also sour. Strange beer, some similarity with a faro.

Odd name. Amber color, white head. Aroma of faint orange and malt. Tastes of malt, dark cherry and yeast. Interesting.

Bottle. Nice, dark golden body with a decent white head. Aroma has some berry or fruit mixed with oak an yeast. Also some acidity in aroma. Rather sweet, fruity and sour flavor. An interesting combination of sweet and sour beer. A bit watery palate. Funny.

Bottled. Clear, golden brew with some carbonation and an off-white head. Lightly acidic aroma with apples, berries and yeast. Citric and sweet flavor with some berries and yeast. Lightly astringent mouthfeel. A pleasant beer that could use some more sting, but it combines the sweetness and acidity quite well. (060530)

Beautiful amber color; generous head. Very nice aroma, fruity and sour (like a Flemish Ale), woody. Quite dry mouthfeel but with an interesting vinous character, some astringency and sourness; thin at the end and a bit metallic (this would be the only negative point).
