This distinctive type of beer was originally brewed to withstand the abuses of shipping in foul weather to Imperial Russia. It was a favourite of Russian nobility whose taste for the finest food and drink was world famous. A rich flavourful brew; deep chocolate in colour with a roasted barley nose and flavour that is a complexity of malt, hops, alcohol and yeast. Fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’.

550ml bottle. Pours an opaque black with faint reddish hue and a medium, creamy, long lasting, tan head that leaves curtains of lace. Sweet aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, licorice, dried fruit and a hint of smoke. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, dark chocolate, licorice, toffee and sour, dark fruit with bitter coffee in a dry finish. Medium body with a creamy, smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation. Nicely done.

Bottle pour into tulip glass from The City, Seabrook, NH. Appearance is virtually opaque black--ruby color with light source directly behind, with nice sparkle at the edges of the glass, finger-plus width light brown, foamy head with good retention and nice lacing. Aroma is rich roasted malt, chocolate, earth, telltale Samuel Smith mineral/water/yeast. Taste is earth, fruity sweetness, roasted malt, minerals, late hint of chocolate. Palate is medium bodied with thin, frothy texture, average-to-lively carbonation and dry, crisp finish. Overall, less bold and sweet than American versions of impy stouts. Consistent with other offerings from this brewer.

Bottle shared thanks to sjogro. Almost black with nice sized light brown head. Licorice, plums, sweet malts, soft roast, nice earthy notes, slick dried fruits, light coffee. Over medium sweet and medium bitter. Over medium bodied with a bit oily feel.

Impressive Imperial Stout, not very fussy about its presentation, fairly straightforward in profile, yet everything here is done so well; the malts give off heavy notes of chocolate, anise, and dark roast, while the back end never grows anything but the slightest bit of sweetness, offset by a dry, bitter chocolate finish and a warm, licorice-tinged fade. Pours a dark brown-black with a moderate beige head and good lacing. Nose is chocolate and hints of English yeast. Texture is smooth and medium-bodied, not thick but thick enough. Very nice pint.

Bottle at home. Pours near black with a lasting beige head. Light roast, some dried fruits, leather and tobacco. Also a bit of chocolate. Semi-sweet. Past BBF, probably already peaked.
