This distinctive type of beer was originally brewed to withstand the abuses of shipping in foul weather to Imperial Russia. It was a favourite of Russian nobility whose taste for the finest food and drink was world famous. A rich flavourful brew; deep chocolate in colour with a roasted barley nose and flavour that is a complexity of malt, hops, alcohol and yeast. Fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’.

Very little head, but a nice lacing around the edge of the glass. A beautiful colour and what I can only describe as a heady aroma of toasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate when I stuck my nose in the top. The flavour was much the same, but muted, which was probably because I poured it too cold, alongside a hefty kick of alcohol. As it warmed those flavours developed. A very nice mouthfeel from all of the malt. A very good, solid, imperial stout with a fantastic aroma.
