This distinctive type of beer was originally brewed to withstand the abuses of shipping in foul weather to Imperial Russia. It was a favourite of Russian nobility whose taste for the finest food and drink was world famous. A rich flavourful brew; deep chocolate in colour with a roasted barley nose and flavour that is a complexity of malt, hops, alcohol and yeast. Fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’.

Coffee nose. Opaque black with a ruby hue, good two finger creamy tan head, receding slowly, good lacing. Rich aroma, roasted malts, coffee, cocoa, dark fruits, brown sugar, cinnamon, peat. Smooth taste, medium sweet and bitter, malty, dark chocolate, dark fruits, middle part roasted coffee, with earthy notes and a salty note. Full to medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, mild malty bittersweet aftertaste, woody and spicy notes. Rich, well-balanced and round Imperial Stout, excellent.

Bottle from Cambridge Wine Merchants, Cherry Hinton Road. Dark indigo/black with a quickly dissipating tan head. Opaque. Caramel, salt liquorice, seawater and a generous amount of tar in the aroma. Sweet taste with a decent balancing sourness. There’s a salty/umami note in the long finish with liquorice and tobacco in the aftertaste. Body is oily and fairly thick. Really nice beer, would have scored even higher if it didn’t smell so weird.

Opaque black with a low mocha coloured head which show decent retention but no lacing at all. Fine but not too intense aroma: moderate/delicate roasted malts, milk coffee, red fruits and a light alcohol note. Overall somewhere in the likes of a fruit cake. Taste follows the aroma with low bitterness if compared to the average imperial/export stout. Nice sweet/warming fruity/alcohol finish and aftertaste. Medium body, very low carbonation, nice silky, delicate mouthfeel. An enjoyable strong stout, well balanced and nicely complex, though not too intense

Bottle, 330 ml , courtesy of and shared with JFK10000. Pours black, small tan head. Roasted malts, chocolate, quite sweet, smooth, easy drinkable for what it is, medium bodied, expected more in that compartment. Overall somehow light for a imperial stout.

0.355l bottle. Pitch black body, thin light brown head. Aroma of chocolate, cocoa, reisins, caramel and coffee. Taste of caramel, cocoa, chocolate, coffee, sour cherry, floral hops and a hint of booze. Sweeter and fruitier than the average imperial stout. Very nice.
