This distinctive type of beer was originally brewed to withstand the abuses of shipping in foul weather to Imperial Russia. It was a favourite of Russian nobility whose taste for the finest food and drink was world famous. A rich flavourful brew; deep chocolate in colour with a roasted barley nose and flavour that is a complexity of malt, hops, alcohol and yeast. Fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’.

Rated from old notes. Black as night with a tan head, and a wine/berry aroma. Rich roasted malts, caramel, chocolate, and a touch of currant sourness dominate the taste. Warming. Overall a wonderful and well balanced beer. Savor it as a digestif, and, importantly, at the right temperature.

Bottle from the LCBO. Opaque brown pour with the slightest red tinge under a pillowy long lasting khaki head. Nose is of chocolate, coffee, roast nuts, and molasses. Light sweet toffee with a moderate dark chocolate bitterness and a hints of vanilla. Creamy full mouth with soft carbonation and a lingering bitter finish.

33 cl bottle. Dark brown to black color, short thick persistent brown head. Aroma is dark malts, toasted grains, chocolate and nuts. Follows raw woody tones and earth. Decent hops balance for a mild bitter taste and a clean dry finish. Sensible alcohol already, feels very raw but also tasty. Nice one.
