sampled as Oxfam Bruin, dated best before 2007 ( is this retired beer ?? ) Pours dark brown to black. Foam only lasts for miliseconds. Smell is dry, metallic, some perfumy sweetness, soap, burnt malts, and a slight hint of oxidation in a bad way. Taste is thin, very metallic. oxidation, sweetness ( less good than other oxidized sweet beers though ) over a very thin mouthfeel. The aftertaste is good, in contradiction to the taste, smell and looks. It consists of the portorisation you typically find in aged brown beers, and is sweet, complex, and long lasting. OK carbo, stil.

Exotic specialty beer made for Oxfam with cane sugar from Costa Rica, rice from Thailand and quinoa from Bolivia. Also tasted as Oxfam Bruin Bier, which is the same thing. Thin and quickly dissolving, light beige head, colour a dark burgundy, clear. Subdued aroma in which rice and quinoa are detectable, grainy, hints of date, walnut, chocolate, elderberries, pear, nutmeg, bark, grassy hops. Taste begins with a dried and restricted fruitiness, strong carbonation, light citric acid accent lasting till the finish, grainy and nutty with a weird, chocolatey, almost cola-like sweetness, ending in a light bitterishness but dominated by astringent solvents. Far from flawless and boring.

1/VIII/13 - 33cl bottle from Oxfam Fairtrade Shop (Gent) @ my parents' place - BB: VIII/2015 (2013-677)

Clear dark brown beer, big aery beige head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: alcohol, lots of orange peel, very metallic, smells very cheap. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bitter and metallic start, hint of mocha, caramel, but not sweet. aftertaste: pretty bitter, some orange peel, very metallic ending, non-sweet caramel. This is really bad. Didn't know the water in Melle was so metallic?

Bottle @ home. Nice dark brown color with a deep dark red color coming through. Small beige to light brown head that disappears quickly. Smell malts, lightly dark fruits, a bit sweet, but also a sour touch to it. Taste malts, sweetness, candy sugar, a sour hint and some fruits. Medium body, medium carbonation.

Dziwne piwo niby karmelowe, ciemne i słodowe ale nazbyt słodkie, przesadnie dosładzane brązowym cukrem. Niby ekologiczne ale trochę nie w moim typie ten ciemny dubbel

Hazy brown body. Small off-white fizzy head. Aroma of sweet malts, grapes, molasses, ... quite ok - good balance and ok complexity. Moderately bitter, moderately sweet flavour in a good balance. Nice beer.

July 2010: Formally known as Oxfam Bruin, this is a ’fairtrade’ beer with ingrediants from Thailand, Costa Rica and Bolivia. Only available from Belgian Oxfam shops (as far as I know), this one is from the one in Brugge. Brown 33cl bottle (sediment within) poured into my Westmalle chalice. Dark Ruby Red body, clear and clean looking, good covering of a light brown foamy head which left some lacing as the beer was sunk. Very little smell, some roasted malts maybe, but nothing much. The taste was sour at first, some toated malts, hints of coffee and chocolate, slight but just about detectable. A bit thin and lacking in depth for a 7.5% ABV. I’ll not be rushing out and getting a crate full of this, but one is fine.
