Ale Aged In Wine Barrels With Strawberries and Nectarines
When summer comes to California’s Farmer’s Markets, the stands explode with mountains of mouth watering stone fruit and plump strawberries. Aged in used wine barrels for a year, this refreshing & tart wild ale was made with sweet coastal strawberries from Swanton Berry Farms and high-summer crimson baby nectarines from Blossom Bluff Farms. Here’s to our California summer harvest!

Pours a pale orange-ish gold. Quite cloudy. Solid head. Lots of fine white bubbles. Very good retention with some nice lacing. Aroma is sweet strawberry jam with some background barrel flavor, lightly buttery oak and some deeper grapey-ness. Strawberries seem to be a hard fruit to use in sours. They seem to contribute a rubbery/plasticky touch, and while it’s present in this beer, it’s minimal and handled well against the flavors contributed from the wine barrel. There’s a touch of light funk, as well. The taste is light to medium tart. There’s a little bit of strawberry sweetness up front, but it fades out, and the finish is tart and moderately dry. Lots of strawberry flavor. A touch of that rubber flavor, mostly in the finish, and it kinda fades in and out, much less than some strawberry sours that I’ve tried. The barrel seems to contribute some light vinous flavor, some blackberry/raspberry and mild oak. Very solid taste. A little bit of body, though it’s generally light and lively. Medium pucker - pretty firm sourness in the back of the throat. Almanac continues to impress me with their Farmer’s Reserve sours. I’m looking forward to more.

Bottle. Pours with a hazy peachy golden hued body with a moderately sized white head that succumbs to the acidity, but leaves decent lace. Aromas are of wet hay, medium funk, nice lactic acid, white wine, strawberries, rich stone fruit grape, red currant jam, light leather. Hugely fruit and medium funky with some light barrel lactones and vanilin. Somewhat zesty, ripe plums. Flavors are very jammy, tart and lightly earthy/leathery with the funk. Some robust strawberry character, possibly slightly chlorophenolic along with that. Very juicy. Acidity is cleanly lactic, medium tannin. Very pleasantly fruity. Mild malt character (straw). Lively carbonation, tart/medium sour, pretty dry. Vibrant. Good stuff, but I still prefer 2 of the 4 released so far.

Bottle. Pours hazy golden yelow with a medium fizzy head that mostly dissipates very quickly leaving a ring of foam that laces decently. Aroma is funky, lemon, fruity, wood notes, vinaceous notes. Flavor is lightly sweet at the start, medium tart, a bit barnyard funky, drying out quickly to leave a try tart finish. Fruity, woody, vinaceous. Perhaps strawberry, but I might just be fooling myself on that one. Medium body, high effervescence in the mouth; too much really in the first few sips, but it tones down nicely after that. Very nice sour offering from Almanac yet again!
