Ale Aged In Wine Barrels With Strawberries and Nectarines

When summer comes to California’s Farmer’s Markets, the stands explode with mountains of mouth watering stone fruit and plump strawberries. Aged in used wine barrels for a year, this refreshing & tart wild ale was made with sweet coastal strawberries from Swanton Berry Farms and high-summer crimson baby nectarines from Blossom Bluff Farms. Here’s to our California summer harvest!

Bottle @ home, via trade with bytemesis. Thanks Mike! Pours a hazy yellow orange appearance with a white head. Jesus, there’s a shit ton of fruit in the nose. Tons of strawberries, lemon/orange citrus fruits, funk, and white wine in the nose. Quite tart strawberry, very juicy, funky, vinous flavor with some slight herbal/weedy notes. Really unbelievable how much strawberry is packed into this beer.

Bottle thanks to a trade! Pours a hazy gold with a peach hue and a bubbly white head that dissipates to the edges quickly. Aroma has a really nice light tartness with a touch of citrus, flora and light barnyard. Flavor behind tart with citrus and mellows to let some light fruits and funk to come through.

375mL bottle, pours a cloudy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma is extremely fruity, bringing out intense nectarine, some strawberries, wild yeast, and some funkiness. Flavour is very fruity, full of medium sour fruits, chardonnay, wild yeast and some funk. The specific fruit quality is not very noticeable - it seems like a peachy sourness. Puckering dey mouthfeel. Very highly drinkable. Great stuff.

Bottle shared at CBC Clerkenwell - London. Many thanks to Aaron for bringing this along. Pours hazy gold with a foamy white head. Moderate sharp tangy lemon in the nose, light funk. Mellow sweet flavor with dry strawberries, light dough. Light bodied with average, massaging carbonation. Clean finish, moderately tangy, some sweat, strawberry seeds. Very tasty stuff.

Aroma is slightly acidic with a balanced barnyard funk as well. The beer is rather fruity as well with the strawberries being more prevalent than the nectarines. The strawberries do have a touch of a plastic character but not as bad as other strawberry beers. Faint nectarine notes. Pours a slightly cloudy gold with a medium thickness white head that steadily recedes leaving no lacing. Flavor starts with a hint of sweet malt but is quickly washed away by a refreshing tartness. The flavor has a nice vinous quality mid palate with notes of wine and oak. The finish is fruity with faint strawberry and moderate nectarine notes which help balance the acidity. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. There is a low acidic astringency and the alcohol warmth is low as well. The beer is a bit sticky but the acidity helps wash that away. Overall another very nice beer from Almanac. Their Farmer’s Reserve series is really nice and well made. I am continually impressed by these beers, though my expectations were low after years of crap. Who knew good beers could come out of Hermitage.
