Flesje gekregen.

Sample at ZBF 2018, merci Denis.

At ZBF. One of those beers made subordinate to one simple idea outside of beer, in this case ’cuberdons’, a kind of traditional, cone-shaped red sugar candy typical for Eastern Flanders (Ghent in particular). Used to be made by (first) Boelens and then (briefly) Van Steenberge before the commissioner turned to Contreras to have his ill-fated idea continued. If only he hadn’t. Off-white, moussy head with opening middle, hazy copper red colour. Aroma of cuberdons, cuberdons and cuberdons with hints of glue, caramelized sugar, soap and plastic but hardly anything ’beery’. Same, unfortunately, for the taste: very sweet sugariness and a flavor indeed precisely mimicking the flavor of fresh cuberdons, some underlying (wheat?) sourishness, caramelly malt background, descending into a finish of more cloying cuberdon sweetness along with growing soapiness and eventually something rubbery making it even less pleasant than it began. I never had the Boelens nor the Van Steenberge versions so I can only judge this and this to me borders on the undrinkable: I never liked cuberdons to begin with (I hated them even as a child) but in the present beer world, I don’t think this kind of ’mock beers’ do the evolution of Belgian beer culture any good at all. This is a ridiculous, childish caricature of a beer and physically near to undrinkable on top of that. Ghastly!

An ale, previously ratable under an entry brewed by Van steenberge @ 7 ABV. However, this one was purchased by the Cuberdon-seller I believe this is brewed for. This version is brewed at Boelens, and had 7.3. Not sure if previous entry was off, or it actually changed, but the guy told me this was Always brewed at boelens. Label is slightly different than the Van Steenberge entry on RB as well. This one pours dark purple, with a small pink head. Smell is very, very sweet. cherry notes, as well as a bit soapy. Taste is sharp, straight Sugar, mild fruity notes. A bit of a bitter back, that builds up towards the aftertaste. Still filthy sweet though. Far from balanced as well. the back ( with the bitter aspects) completely turns against the aspects some might like ( sweetness ) and makes this beer not only unbalanced, but probably undrinkable to most, including me. OK MF and bit too high carbo.
