Svartekunst - Black Magic - is a Porter Stout we brewed initially in summer 2011, to celebrate our Batch Number 100. Each year sees a new vintage, and the detailed recipe is adjusted each time, so that later tasting sessions can make some really interesting comparisons. As the label suggests, this is a highly potent and powerful beer. The bitterness, however, will fade in the cellar, and the vinous tones will amplify. Coffee, burnt notes, smoke and leather are the dominant flavours. Residual sweetness is heavy, while the hops are dry with a bitter finish. We believe this stout can improve for 20 years, hence the legend "Best After" rather than "Best Before".

Opaque dark brown beer with a small pale tan head. Palate starts smooth but turns minerally crisp. Smooth dark malts. Nice dark chocolate. Whisper of cream. Finishes light and dry. Pretty light and tasty!

Old rating, 0,25l bottle @ home:
Heilt flat. Fyldig sødmerik lukt med preg av mørk malt, humle, mørk sjokolade, kaffi, salt lakris, rosin, mørkt kandisukker, karamell, sitrus og soya. Rund sødmerik smak med preg av mørk malt, humle, sjokolade, mørkt kandisukker, kaffi, alkohol, lakris, rosin, sitrus, soya. Litt lite fylde, god bitterhet som set litt. God, men treng nok ein del lagring.

75 cl bottle vintage 2012 @ PBF VIII. Batch 259, BBE 2014
Aroma has cocoa, some dark chocolate. Flavour has salty licorice, hay notes, soy sauce and some herbal notes. Too thin and salty but nice anyway.

750ml bottle @ PBF 2013
Pours dark brown, almost black with a brown head. Aroma of vanilla, sweet syrup, roasty malts, dark chocolate and coffee. Taste is sweetish, caramely, roasty, syrupy with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, toffee and vanilla. Finish is smooth and caramely with chocolatey notes. Quite sweet, but balanced and tasty.

Bottled at PBF, thanks KnutAlbert! Near black, minimal head. Rich aroma of pear and licorice. Sweet with full body and rounded mouthfeel. Sticky honey, licorice and coffee. Warming finish with marked coffee bitterness. Interesting flavouirs, but on the sticky side.

Et spesielt øl. God lukt, minner litt om vin på lukt. Mørkt fyldig øl med et hav av smaker og ettersmak. -dyrt.

Bottled 2012 and shared with (and courtesy of) ClubGonzo. Has a deep reddish brown to black colour with a small light beige head. Roasted aroma with coffee, dark chocolate, leather and oak. Delicious. Lots of roast in a complex and sweet flavour with lots of dark chocolate, port, coffee, rubber and alcohol. Rich and silky mouth feel, and has a medium to heavy bitterness. A fantasticly complex and powerful ale with a good bitter touch.

On tap at Nærbø Ølfestival. Looking gorgeous this one, with it’s big, dense, light tan head soon diminishing into a finger-thick layer of cream leaving lacings. Black body. Licorice, roasted malts, some burnt notes and coffee, as well as a pleasant touch of dried fruits and alcohol in the aroma. The flavor is nicely sweet, with coffee, licorice and some burnt notes. Dried fruits and a touch of alcohol too. Full-bodied and supersmooth, definitely deserving a 5 on the palate score. Lots of roasted style bitterness and some hoppy bitterness in the end. A bit warming in the end maybe, but certainly a beauty. 111022
