Svartekunst - Black Magic - is a Porter Stout we brewed initially in summer 2011, to celebrate our Batch Number 100. Each year sees a new vintage, and the detailed recipe is adjusted each time, so that later tasting sessions can make some really interesting comparisons. As the label suggests, this is a highly potent and powerful beer. The bitterness, however, will fade in the cellar, and the vinous tones will amplify. Coffee, burnt notes, smoke and leather are the dominant flavours. Residual sweetness is heavy, while the hops are dry with a bitter finish. We believe this stout can improve for 20 years, hence the legend "Best After" rather than "Best Before".

Flaske 750ml delt hjemme med Håvard 16 Sep 14. Svart. Ved høy kvelling kan en framprovosere et raskt dalende mokkafarget skum som flater helt ut. Forsiktig lakrisaroma. Smaken balansert. Lakris & kaffe. Tørr. Litt lite variasjon. Alkoholen godt kamuflert - men jeg hadde vel forventet mer innhold.

Sample at Bergen Ølfestival 2014. Black with a minimal tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, licorice, bitter chocolate and some dried dark fruit. Not that much carbonation and with a thick oily mouthfeel. Really nice and vinous, a perfect beer to sip.

Poured from a 2011 vintage, 25 cl bottle. Batch 100, thanks Gunnar! Aroma is sweet with moderately strong chocolate notes and medium light roast with faint smoke. Some tobacco and leather notes. Cherry, plum and prune esters. Pours black with some dark brown highlights on the edges. Small, faint, dark tan head recedes quickly to the edges. Light lacing and moderately long legs. Flavor is fairly sweet with a lot of dark chocolate. Light roast with a medium light smoke note. Faint peat smoke. Medium bitterness and a faint alcohol spice. Medium light tobacco and leather. Light anise with faint plum and prune. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a really nice, enjoyable stout with some really nice character. Rather dry finish and a touch watery than I would expect for a stout this size. Nice, complimentary smoke and roast notes with good tobacco and leather character. Nice complexity without any need for barrels.

Bottle shared at CBC Clerkenwell during the Gunnar Tasting. Vintage 2011. Big thanks to Gunnar himself for this one! Pours clear, dark brown with a creamy, beige head. The nose is all torched earth, leather fruits, tar and baking cocoa. Light to medium sweet flavor with burnt wood, bittersweet chocolate and prominent earthy bitterness. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming to finish with lots of dirt, char and bitter cocoa. Decent.

Quite black. The aroma is rich, with lots of chocolate, rich earthy, slightly hoppy nose. Inky, soft, fruity, intense dark chocolate, lots of acidity (dark orchard fruit). Good strong porter.
