Dry-Hopped Sour Ale with Grapes

We’ve been friends with the folks at Smog City for many years and getting to brew a beer with them was a dream come true. Truly, only in the world of dreams could this remarkable beer have been manifested. A Belgian-style golden ale, brewed with Semillon and Viognier grapes plus three types of hops, fermented with Brettanomyces Trois as well as our house yeast strain, then blended with a sour blonde ale and finally dry-hopped with Amarillo hops.

Bottle. Pours hazy rich yellow with large whitish spongy head, fruity aroma, high carbonation, sour, champaigne-like taste with spices and alcohol overtones, long finish. A great beer, very hard to describe all its intricacies,

Bottle purchased from the RS. Mostly clear yellow with ample carbonation. Aroma is white grapes and Brett, light Apricot.

Flavor starts with Brett, followed by white grape and finishes with a dry white wine finish. Light traces of yeast with hints of tropical fruits. Not bad at all.

Bottle from RS. split 4 ways at 60F in a snifter. Sort of a light orange 2 finger head. Nose is nice. very fruity aroma, some grape skins, kiwi and tangerine. There’s a light tartness to this, pretty musky with apple and some pepper spice. It’s very drinkable but the taste does wear on you. Not sure I’d like to drink a lot but it’s decent.

What the Funk, Denver, October 2014. Pours a hazy golden yellow appearance with an off white head. Aroma has some white grapes, vanilla, light oak, and touch of fun. There’s also some tropical fruits in the flavor. Some straw/grassy notes. Ok.

Complex, yes. but possibly too complex. Too many things going on here for any one thing to stand out. Wild, maybe, but If your expecting a sour, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

Draft pour at the Toronado tasting event. Pours a cloudy yellow color with a sour, amazing citrus aroma. Initially a mild sour fruit flavor with a bit of a spice kick added in. Finishes more spice then tart. Really good beer here.

Very subtle bretta, nicely done. Well balanced. A little light on the finish - light tart. Pours orange without much head or lacing. Tap at Snallygaster.
