Currant War is a boutique collaboration with Homage Brewing inspired by the delicate flavors of French macarons. Floral aromas of Tahitian vanilla whet the senses for the tart brightness of black currant, quickly tempered by the savory roundness of vanilla beans on the mid-palate. Currant War was brewed with violet flowers steeped in the boil for a lingering finish of soft earth and early-summer sweetness. Medium-bodied and elegant with a present-but-pleasant heat from its 14.55% ABV.

Bottle pour from Valley Beverage. Opaque black with no sparkle, thin head fading to a ring and no lacing. Aroma is strong currants, violets over sweet malt, bourbon and hint of vanilla. Taste is strong currants, bourbon (somewhat astringent), lighter vanilla. Smooth, soft carbonation, no sign of alcohol and finish as taste. Overpowering black currant.

500 ml bottle shared by tfontana. Thank you Tom!! 2021 vintage. Bringing it back from Valley Beverage! Aroma is exclusively bold black currant. Flavor is juicy, almost tart currant. It’s almost like they said “ let’s use 5000 pounds of black currants and nothing else.” It is hard to find vanilla or any bourbon here.

2021 bottle shared by tfontana on 4/13/24. Dark, inky, violet-tinged. No head. Currant, some floral notes, tons of bright acidity. Licorice, dark roast and scant base malt. Not getting the vanilla. Not boozey. Very heavily dark chocolatey. Currant is heavy, heavy, heavy. Vanilla softens but not the usual rich malt texture. A bit thin on the malt with so much berry acidity. Spicy, juicy, currant heavy. This shows promise but needs another five years.

Aromas are dark malt, roast, cocoa, dark ripe fruit, and a bit of molasses. Flavors are somewhat similar to nose but much more intense, the cocoa, dark malt, and fruit come out much more add in a bit of coffee. Pretty good if you like this kind of thing but it's not really my cup of tea.

Bottle thanks to Russell. Pours black with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong currant, wood, bourbon, vanilla. Slick body, currant, berry, roast, cocoa, boozy finish, very good.
