Bean Gene is the first variation we did with our Mean Gene barrel-aged Eugene Porter. After months socked away in bourbon barrels, we steeped it with Dark Matter coffee beans prior to bottling. Smooth and well-balanced, with hints of vanilla and an in-your-face coffee flavor, enjoy it at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

650 ml bottle purchased at Binnyβs South loop. Big creamy lasting off white head that Coates the glass. Aroma is big bourbon character with earthy roasted malt, mild coffee and oak.
Flavor is pretty much a carbon copy of the aroma. The body is slightly lean but the flavor is all here. Bourbon forward with the earthy chocolate malts, mild vanilla hints, tones of maple syrup. Mild hints of booze in the finish with a mildly warming sensation after the sip. For a Bourbon Porter with coffee this is damn nice.

Draft sample at the tap room. Solid black, much darker than most porters, understandable since it?s also pretty strong. Smell is mostly the bitterness of a dark roast coffee as the beans come fresh from the roaster; either you like it or hate it. Taste is more bitter coffee, but not as dark roast a coffee as one might look for. Strong alcohol; no doubt about that. Sticky on my lips. This is NOT a Kahlua type drink, but whatever you?d want a beer soaked in coffee to be. Barrel-aging still is apparent in a light vanillin and lignin char taste. But that is all subordinate to the coffee flavout. After a long afternoon of sampling new beers, it?s even worthwhile to contemplate the legs of foam remaining in this small sample glass.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/4/2013. Pours pitch black color with a 2 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, light char, bourbon, oak, vanilla, toffee, toast, light clove, and roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roasted malt, coffee, and bourbon barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, vanilla, toast, toffee, bourbon, oak, clove, light char, and roasted earthiness. Minimal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, toast, vanilla, bourbon, oak, light char, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, coffee, and bourbon barrel flavors; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy, moderately slick, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent BA coffee porter. All around great balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/roasted malt, coffee, and bourbon barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Sample at The Daily Growler UA during the "Lagunitas Tap Invasion" event on 01/09/2014. Brownish-black pour with a medium light beige head that dissipates steadily to a wispy film. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of coffee, chocolate and bourbon. Medium-bodied with flavors of roasted coffee, dark chocolate and bourbon. The finish is subtle booze and coffee. Good beer all around.

Bottle shared by Max at Blippβs surprise tasting. Pours black with tan head. Nose and taste of upfront smooth bourbon, vanilla, oak, roast chocolate and roast coffee. A bit too much forward bourbon mutes the coffee. Medium body.

Bottle at AZ crews epic driveway tasting. Had this immediatly after the Mean Gene however I think i enjoyed this one slightly less. This also tastes of coffee, chocolate, molasses, vanilla, and bourbon sweetness. This is just a little more coffee and I think ratio was perfect in the other. also detected slight more alcohol here even though they are same abv. still awesome, creamy, drinkable and not too sweet
