17/VII/17 - 75cl bottle found at a butcher's on my way from Vliegende Paard brouwerij to my parents where I stopped to grab a sandwich, shared @ the tasting without Jon (home) - BB: 28/II/19 (2017-1041)

Clear bright orange beer, big aery irregular white head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: bit sweet impression, malty, grains, some marzipan, banana. MF: lively carbon, medium body. Taste: bit sourish, pretty bitter, fruity, peach candy, hoppy touch, orange peel. Aftertaste: bit sweet, orange peel, bit sugary, some grains, malty, bit spicy.

Van Steenberge tripel made for the butcheries that are members of Klasse Clubslagers and sold only at those butcheries, most of which are situated in and around Antwerp and the adjacent Waasland region. Available in 75 cl or magnum bottles. Cobweb lacing, very stable, medium sized, off-white head over a hazy peach blonde beer with ochre hue and steady fizz. Aroma of sourdough, old ’jenever’, dried orange peel, burnt rubber, bread crust, powder sugar, bubblegum, some banana, dry hay, cloth, vague raspberry. Soft fruity onset, apricot, some Cape gooseberry, some banana but all rather restrained; soft carbo, bit minerally, smooth with a dried citrus peel accent, bready malt sweetishness, yeasty notes with a spicy, peppery, bit phenolic edge, increasingly so in the finish, where some deep, earthy hop bitterishness appears for balance, as well as a clear presence of wodka-like alcohol, not too well hidden even for a 9.5% ABV beer; residual sweetness is the last impression along with a certain ’wryness’ which is probably to be ascribed to a mixture of the hops with the typical Van Steenberge yeast phenols. Reminds me of Bornem Tripel and probably closely related to it, but I have no idea if this is an alias or not - I think there are minor differences, but it takes some investigation to find out, as neither the brewery nor the commissioner will admit it if it would be the case... Judged by itself, this is at best a very average tripel, nothing out of the ordinary here, plain, tilted to the sweet side and cliché, with a somewhat exaggerated sweetness of white sugar - used to give it that alcohol boost without making it too heavy, I guess. Needs serious refinement, but that can be said of practically all of Van Steenberge’s beers, if you ask me.

Good, receding yellowish head over (cold)hazed orangeish-golden beer. Sweet, white candi sugar, bit leafy, grassy. Faintly spiced yeastesters. Not really dry -some restsweetness. Finish is bitterish, but warming up, the sweetness comes back in force, getting liqueurish by the alcohol and the esters. Spritzy, very slick, slightly burning MF, alcoholburn. Average. Seen the yeastcharacter, my money is on Van Steenberge. Danku, Stef
