On tap at De Moor, Bergen op Zoom. Intense reddish amber pour with an off-white head. Aroma is biscuit, caramel, molasses, black pepper and, unfortunately, some wet cardboard. Sweetish, slick, rather full-bodied. Long-lasting, bitterless finish, with hints of cinnamon and biscuit.

0.75 l bottle from 'Speciaalbierpakket.nl', bottled in March 2019. Clear, deep amber with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, off-white head. Sweetish-malty, gently fruity and moderately yeasty-spicy aroma of caramel, raisins, brown sugar, honey and hints of clove. Gently sweet, malty, moderately bitter, quite yeasty-spicy and slightly fruity taste of caramel, brown sugar, honey, raisins, some clove and maybe a touch of orange peel, followed by a short, moderately bitter, gently yeasty-spicy finish. Medium body, smooth and quite effervescent mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Pleasant Belgian Ale, fairly quaffable, but I don't get that much of the promised hop flavours.

After the Dubbel last year, La Trappe's Isid'Or, brewed since 2009, also got this special edition remake now with different hops. From a 75 cl bottle with cork from a Colruyt supermarket. Very thick and foamy, plaster-like lacing, egg-white, fluffy head on a lightly hazy deep warm amber coloured beer with vaguely ruddy-brownish tinge somehow, perturbed by vivid sparkling and turning misty with sediment. Aroma of soggy rusk, dried field flowers, unripe apricot, chewing gum, brown soap, notes of clove, nutmeg, red apple peel, wet clay, baker's yeast, straw, old cookies and a vague background whiff of DMS (overcooked cabbage) but this latter aspect fortunately remains very vague. Restrainedly sweetish, bit estery onset, green banana, red apple and apricot impressions with a strong bubblegummy undertone, lively carbonation, very soapy mouthfeel (glueish and plastery even), rusk- and bread-like malt body subdued in sweetness but turning more bready in the end due to yeastiness; hop bittering finish indeed, but softly so, floral and grassy, with a lot of that not very pleasant soapiness lingering as well as strong phenolic aspects reminiscent of clove and even lavender. Seems not very different from the regular Isid'Or and I therefore, as with the Dubbel Special Edition, fail to see how what is so 'special' about it compared with the regular. Maybe New World hops would make all the difference next time, but I guess a trappist brewery will not easily come up with such modernism... May get a bit better (less soapy) with age, though, but obviously not hoppier.

Amber colour, light hazy. Off white head, quickly receding but there's a 1 bubble layer retention. Aroma's of fruit candy and caramel malts. Retronasal it's sweetish, fruity, fruit candy (Fruitella), light herbs. Flavour is moderate sweet, herbs, with light bitterness. Medium bodied. Not terribly exciting, but wel crafted.

Dark amber colour with lasting head. Aroma and flavour have a nice caramel sweetness. Hints of pear and peach.

Bottle. Color: Orange amber, off-white head. Aroma: Malt, fruity, yeasty hints. Taste, side by side compared with the original Isid'or: Smoother mouthfeel, less hopbitterness, fruitier with subtle notes of yellow and red fruit, citrus hints. Both are nice, I like the fruiter kind of this special edition but missing the hopbitterness of the original.

Fles gedeeld met familie. Licht amberkleurig bier met matig schuim dat snel weg trekt. Aroma is fruitig en kruidig. Smaak is kruidig en karamel achtig. Jammer dat de smaak snel weg trekt.
