Kettle sour aged in Chardonnay barrels by a craft brewery in Barcelona; bottle 363 of apparently only 590 made. Loose and open, off-white, large-bubbled, quickly diminishing and dissolving head over a cloudy ochre-blonde beer with beige glow - turning murky in the end, like homemade apple juice. Aroma of lively sweet white wine (sweeter than Chardonnay normally is, in fact), ripe white grapes and wine must, sweet sherry or even madera, stewed plums, fermenting pear juice, soggy brown bread, kiwi, vanilla-scenting oak, melon, sugared lime juice, sweet spring blossoms, hint passionfruit. Tart, fruity onset, more sour than expected based on aroma, green apple and redcurrant, unripe plum even with somewhat astringent effect; very soft carb, smooth mouthfeel. A sharpish lactic acidity runs through it all, kefir-like and fruity, while a much dimmer wheat sourishness is unfolded, with a nice bready edge; green and eventually yellow fruitiness remains strong, shifting from sharp green apple to softer white grape, with the Chardonnay eventually adding vinosity, grapeyness and soft tartness, as well as a nice woody lacing. Some kiwi, passionfruit and lychee pass by as well, but white grape and green apple remain the main fruity components; a chalky aspect then pops up in the end, something I seem to encounter in literally every Berliner Weisse I drink, no matter how coloured or 'corrupted' by special treatments or ingredients. In all, a colourful, pleasant and elegant elaboration on the old Berliner Weisse theme, I was expecting worse, to be frank - but its appearance could have been more appealing.

75cl bottle at Belgian Beergeeks/Brewver summer tasting at Tim's house. Blend# 2, BB 11/2025.
