Bottle (75cl) from Dranken Geers, Oostakker, Nr Gent, Belgie, consumed at mum’s, Worcester, Friday 6th May 2016 Pours gold edging towards amber/orange with a large off white big frothy head. Fresh, clean nose some herbs, a little zesty and then yeasty. Plenty of spiciness in the mouth, fruity with a soft mouthfeel. It is hoppy and there is a bitterness but amazed at the 60 IBU, I think that the typical Belgian yeast elements have all but swamped many of the typical IPA characteristics. I like this, Malheur make some great beers and this is a worthy addition to their selection but unlike Troubadour or Dochthor De Korenaar the need to work on IPAs a little longer. At horecabeurs 2015. Pours unclear blonde, good white head. Smell os malty, remotely bitter. Taste is very bitter - on the unbalanced, extreme side -with no malty or aromatic back to sustain it. Please, don’t call this an IPA, malheur...

Towering, lightly yellow dense head, over very well-carbonated clear golden beer; shards of lace. Alcohol, white candi sugar, but also fine garden herbs, bit citrus. BItterish to bitter, again citrus; quite hoppy, bit grassy. Attenuation and dryness again pointing towards white candi sugar. Dry, spritzy, medium bodied, alcoholwarming. Not bad, hoppier than some.

F: white long lasting. C: hazy golden, opaque. A: orange/apple peels, banana, honey, sweet malt, yeasty, hint of coriander, biscuit/vanilla. T: bottle 0,75l from Poperinge beer festival, on the bottle is written original Belgian ale so I don’t take it as an IPA, malty, huge grassy, floral decent bitterness, spicy, coriander, banana, cloves, yeasty, peppery, orange peels, sweet but for me well balanced good strong Belgian ale that emphases more hoppy tones with good hidden 10% ABV, worth to try.

Sample @ 6de Gents Bierfestival 2015.

New addition to the Malheur range, with thick, dense, frothy, snow white head and misty yellow blonde colour. Aroma of apple peel, flowers, white bread, bitter honey, hints of vanilla and banana, but not too much which would suggest a 60 IBU hop strength, actually. The same happens in the mouth: crisp and fruity, with hints of gooseberry, pear and banana, strongish carbo over a smooth, somewhat bready and honeyish malt body, ending in an only slightly above average hop bitterness, florally aromatic as well as earthy and ’deep’, but not lasting as long as you would expect from a beer boasting 60 IBU. An alcohol warmth is unmistakable in the end but does not disturb. This is a more than decent beer clearly bearing the Malheur trademark of solidity, reliability and good taste, but the hops are not powerful enough to call this a DIPA as is apparently the case here, in my book it will be classified as a tripel, or a ’Belgian IPA’ at most.

(Thx! for sharing) Sampled 750 ml. bottle @ Gents Bierfestival 2015. Hazy golden, little head. Nose is sweet esters, grains, dough, candy, light soap, faintly almost phenolic. Taste is soap, sweet dough, grass, sugar, fizzy, esters. A bit fizzy body. A middling Belgian for me, I would really not call this one a DIPA.
