VAT 59 is a perfect example of an Oude Geuze with a sturdy oak character. Woodiness, combined with the fullness of body of this Oude Geuze, gives it a pleasant and well-rounded feeling. Slightly smoky notes, a gently enhanced bitterness and flavours of nuts make this Oude Geuze one to linger with and enjoy. Foeder n° 59 was originally a calvados storage barrel. This barrel has been put into service in October 2007. And over the years, it has now been in service long enough to be called a 'Lambic barrel'. Remarkably, it now releases more of its woody character into the Lambic than it did in the past. And you can definitely taste it!

Pours a slightly hazed, darker blonde. Small and fast fading white head. Scent is giving a more tart-than-usual impression. Typical boon fruityness is very toned down. Oaky. Still soft and gentle at the base, but less recognizable specifically as Boon. Has got almost some OB vibes, towards the grean apple more than the more 'full' fruityness Boon tends to have, which make the 2 stand appart. Taste is ... Something else! chewy, fullbodied, medium acidity but very raw, and as I'm tasting it blind, it makes me wonder about the barrel contents before beer? Almost like some sort of spirit (aquavit) minus the boozyness ?

Upon reading the specifics, calvados seems to be the origin of the barrel. Though used multiple times, I did get the apple, and the spirrity context, though I didn't think about calvados specifically.

A much more barrel-specific boon than I ever had, for sure. I'm not sure if i'm loving it - to my own taste - but I ám sure I appreciate it, and far more so than the Barrel 16 I tasted yesterday of the same box. It's a good geuze, no doubt, with a fairly unique expression. It just lacks on being Boon to me, or a barrel I particularly enjoy myself. Shrouded in personal opinions, I cannot give the beer the high score others would (and should) give it,

Flaska från SB. Disig gulorange vätska med högt stabilt skum. Stor kropp, fin funkig doft och friska krusbär, gröna druvor och äpplen. Fat, läder, ost, tobak, vanilj och en fin avslutande bedja. Fantastiskt gott

375mL bottle, pours a hazy golden with a medium white head. Aroma brings out barnyard funk, leather, some citrus, and a touch of petroleum. Flavour is moderately funky, with plenty of citrus, hay, leather, and moderate barnyard funk. Lightly acidic, moderately citric and funky on the finish. Not the most complex of the VAT series, but very nicely made as usual.
