Bottle sample at a Leo Cell's tasting at Porter & Sons. Hazy golden. Barnyard, oak, cobwebs, fruitiness, sour, citric, rounded, lively carbonation. Really great.

The Mega Blend for last year's Toer de Geuze, a wonderful event which I can now think back of with fond memories thanks to this bottle - I cellared it for about ten months because I deemed it a bit young at the time of purchasing (at Tilquin during Toer de Geuze). The first edition to include lambic by Herberg, HORAL's latest member, with an extra festive element of celebrating the twenty-fifth birthday of HORAL. Egg-white, medium thick, frothy, tiny-bubbled and densely structured, stable head on an initially near-clear, warm and pure yellow-golden blonde robe with a steady stream of lively sparkling rising up in the middle, turning deeper misty and more apricot-tinged further on. Powerful aroma of wild apples, raw quince, dusty attic, haystack, old books, dried lemon peel, oxidized 'extra brut' champagne, dry earth, sawdust and wooden furniture, dried sorrel, some dusty old museum and preserved onion hints - as well as barnyard (fermented farmland) showing up as the emptying of the bottle progresses. Spritzy, sharp onset, lemon-like acidity round an unripe green plum-like astringent element, crabapple, raw quince, wood sorrel and sour unripe wild berries, lots of lively champagne-like sparkling with strong and long-lasting but refreshing minerally effects; bread-crusty core under sedate but strongly drying lactic tartness, tannic woodiness and more colourful lemony and wild apple-like sourness, sprinkled with dust (a dusty attic full of dusty old bookshelves) but also with a light funky touch (damp hay, old leather) from the Brett. Ends long and dry, with tannic wood, dried lemon peel, green wild fruits and that dusty element continuing; the overall acidity remains relatively sharp (or 'neig' as they say in the Pajottenland) but never becomes vinegary and keeps an essentially 'dusty old' core alive till the last drop. Very late into the play, a 'deep' earthy old hop bitter element appears too, underneath all the rest, as usual in this style. I think it was not such a bad idea to cellar this bottle for a while - but I would not cellar it for much longer, as I have the impression that these HORAL Megablends, contrary to the geuzes by individual producers, are not the very best geuzes for extensive ageing, considering the ones I had at ten or more years of age. At this stage, however, this is a dry, 'dusty' (I seem unable to get over that aspect), tannic and woody geuze coloured with a lively lemony acidity - so no complaints whatsoever. As usual, De Troch stands out among the rest with its typical 'bitter weed'-like character, but chlorine-like Boon, grape-like Lindemans and apple-like Timmermans are also recognizable (the rest seems to blend in more); all things considered, I must admit that I am less impressed with this one than with the 2021 edition - but hey, I am looking back with a warm feeling of nostalgia to last year's Toer when I drove from Oud Beersel to Boon and then Tilquin, and cannot wait for the next edition to come.

Mycket gott

Bottle from Arie. You legend!! The final beer I drink as a pleb. Tomorrow i am a doctor. Gorgeous barrel aroma. Decent head. Gorgeous taste. Almost too rasy finish. Decent geuze - not the best I've had but brilliant all the same.

Clear golden colour with thin head. Aroma of old leather, lemon citrus, cork, wood. Previous editions seemed Boon dominant. This one a bit less. Sweeter notes in the background and also a more lemony, sharp note in the aftertaste. Complex with layers and layers of depth.

0.75l bottle thanks to Lore. Slightly hazy orange body with a thin white head. Vinegar, wood, lemon zest, some basil and white pepper. Significantly more sour than the '21 version. Actually I like this more. Great gueuze.
