Pre-War Stout

This stout is old-school enough to present the “ethereal” brettanomyces character taken on by well-cellared stock ales in the dusty logs of long-passed brewers, while being just modern enough in style to use the drum roasted malts that we know and love from today’s stouts and porters. This trip back to the first decade of the 1900s was brewed, cellared, and can-conditioned for natural carbonation at our brewery in Kelowna, BC.

Poured from the tap. Black with small beige head. Dry brett, roast malt, underlying chocolate malt notes. Decent.

Roast and a little Brett. Some lemon. Black pour with decent head and lacing. Bitter finish with only a hint of tang. Bretta just a hint, which is great for a stout. Cool stuff.

473 ml can. Pours a very dark brown with moderate bubbly tan head that dissipates quickly. Aromas of bretty dark fruit and roasted malts. Flavors of nutty chocolate and roasted malts. Bitter and subtly sour finish. More of an old school porter IMHO.

Pours very good beige foam, though with mediocre density and good blackish brown body with some visible carbonation. A Chunky aroma of coconut and coffee bean, too much carbonation, a modest effort. Taste is a semi-sour molasses and deep cocoa, smooth but somehow a little overly rustic. Like a musty old museum, seems interesting but gets boring pretty quick.

Dark brown, with a thin head. On the nose, brett, chocolate, roast and wine barrels. It's got a bit of fizz to it - I'm thinking going old ale on this would mean not can-conditioning because it's clearly gone overactive at this point. After the analysis, though, it's a stout with bugs and some sourish component. Reasonable for authenticity, but not my cup of tea.

473mL can, pours black with a small tan head. Nose is big on the funky brett, followed by roasted malt, and some earthy undertones. Flavour is heavily roasted, with lots of funky brett and roasted malt duking it out. I'm also getting a subtle bandaid character underneath that might just be a function of the roast/brett marriage that doesn't work all that harmoniously. Odd one—not particularly enthralled with it, but I guess it accomplishes what it set out to do.
