Named for a retired California Western Railroad steam engine on the Fort Bragg to Willits run through the Redwoods, Old No. 38 Stout is a smooth, firm-bodied stout with the toasted character and coffee notes of dark malts and roasted barley.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Pours a very beautiful, clear, reddish mahogany with a dense, creamy beige coloured head. Roasted, lightly burned aroma. Medium body with accents of lightly burned malt and a hint of coffee. Light underlying sweetness all the way through. The malts leave quite some bitterness on my palate in the finish. 260206

Bottle: Poured a clear light black color stout with a bigger then average creamy off-white head with pretty good retention. Aroma of coffee was pretty intense with some roasted malt. Coffee taste was not as dominant as I would have expected because of the aroma. Body is quite light with low carbonation. Hops level is definitely too low for my own taste. Not bad overall but a bit boring I guess.

Dark brown that transmits just a bit of light, tan head, frothy. Aromas are nice-of dark chocolate, burnt malt, maybe some molasses. Flavor is sharp of espresso and charcoal. A hint of fleeting molasses flavored sweetness in the background.

bottle - Pours black and opaque with a moderate, long lasting head. It has a pleasant aroma of roast, chocolate malt. The mouthfeel features light carbonation and a medium body. Flavors of roast malt with coffee and chocolate notes are apparent followed by a moderately bitter, lingering finish. Kudos to North Coast. This is a nice stout.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a very dark brown color with a medium sized dark brown head. The aroma is strong with smoky and roasted malts and a faint hint of cocoa. The flavor is dry and very roasty with an almost smoky undertone, bakers chocolate and a slightly grainy finish. The dry graininess lingers on the tongue long after the beer has passed.Full bodied.
