Impale IPA delivers hoppy insurrection, through biting bitterness and big tropical fruit aromas derived from the combination of Cascade, Simcoe, Nelson Sauvin & Citra hops used.

Ed Young's recipe was originally winner of an IBD homebrew competition. Not only did he win the chance to brew it with us, he came to work for us for a number of years. Ed has now moved on but he beefed up the original recipe with an increased dry hop before he left.

Bottle drank on hols in St Ives. Bright clear gold beer with a small white head. Palate is dry and crisp. Light pale malt, touch of honey. Nicely integrated orange peel and mellow pine hops. Light dry finish with a touch of lactose - cream. Decent.

330ml bottle at home. Pours clear yellow with a billowy white head, which stays around to the end. Smells of dough and lemon, and a bit of butter. More cereals on the taste, and a little too sweet for me. Expecting hop balance to come, but it didn’t. OK.

33cl bottle at Oluthuone Kaisla, Helsinki. Pours (pale) golden with a white head. Malty and slightly hoppy aroma with citrus and hints of caramel and pine. Medium sweet with caramel and citrus and a slightly spicy finish with a fairly decent bitterness. Ok beer, but not my favourite kind of IPA, a bit too much on the sweet side and not enough hops. Bottle at Inn Deep, Glasgow. It pours clear golden amber with a medium white head. The nose is bitter-sweet, soor plooms (boiled sweets), passion fruit, bread/fruit loaf and a touch of spice. The taste is crisp, earth, grass, wood, dough, toasty, light caramel, lemon and some soap with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Decent.

33cl bottle pours with a clear gold body that has copper hues and supports a thin white head of foam. The aroma offers up some spicy somewhat yeasty notes followed by fruity malt sweetened citrus as well as a mineral note. The taste has a decent load of malt sweetened citrus hops creating a citrus gummy bear to sweet hard candy like sensation. Quickly the hops do get increasing bitter to midway and into the finish to the point of becoming pleasing tart grapefruit notes to a touch of lime. This achieves a tasty citrus hop bitterness with only echoes of the initial sweet citrus hop flavor into the finish. Darn nice IPA.
