Unusual beer in being a bourbon barrel aged imperial ‘pale ale’ instead of ‘stout’ – can shared by Meeki, cheers! Pale yellowish beige, moussey, opening head on a clear orange-peach blonde beer with amberish tinge and lots of protein dots everywhere. Aroma of orange peel, bergamot, dried lavender, ferrous spring water, dry biscuit, egg yolk, persimmon, sandalwood, peach. Clean, sweetish onset, peach, persimmon and a hint of strawberry, medium carbonated with full, slick mouthfeel; biscuity maltiness but thinly so, under residual honeyish sweetness and vanilla-like oakiness. Woody tannins as such remain however very subtle, much more so than this warming bourbon flavour and alcohol; the overall sweetness persists through it all, and the alcohol becomes a tad wry and tiring in the end. Weird and not feeling like an APA of any kind, imperial or not – more barleywine-esque, in fact, which should surprise no one at this strength and with this kind of treatment. Took a while to get used to, somehow I could not entirely find the balance in here.

330ml can from Luvians, St Andrews. It pours clear deep red - brown with a dissipating khaki head. The aroma is sweet - sour, intoxicating, heady notes of bourbon, bourbon soaked oak, vanilla, toasted nut, pecan pie, toffee, fruit cake, splash of coconut water and honeycomb crunch ice cream. The taste is dry, touch of bitterness, sappy, resinous, green, piney, coconut water, warming booze, tannin, big bourbon character, bourbon soaked oak, cola, white grape, fruit cake, toffee, toasted nut, pecan pie, black tea, slick and warming booze with a drying, booze soaked - oak finish. Fulsome body and fine carbonation. Super fun stuff. I assume the bad rates are from people hoping for a hazy IPA of some description? Silly, but fun.

Can. Amber. Lime, tequila, boozy, soft vanilla, puke, salty, caramel malts, grassy hops. Medium sweet and bitter. Over medium bodied. A bit all over the place, interesting, but needs to be shared.

Thin lacing head in a reddish brown well carbonated body, Pith, herbal, bitter & medicinal aroma. Medium bodied, smooth & slightly sticky on the back. Orange, lemon, whisky & oaked tastes with bitter hoppy finish. That's excellent, so well brewed. Tastes like a hopped up strong Hot Toddy - which is whisky, cloves & lemon & used as a remedy for colds in UK.

Can sample at a tasting at Yoav's place. Cloudy deep golden. Wood, fruitiness, vanilla, sweet, oxidation, funky, syrupy, a bit umami, alcohol, oily, weird.

Tasting at Ryan's, can, packaged 05/11/21, just above 1 year old, bb 2024
Cloudy amber colour. Strange aroma, soma malt, tobacco, cherries. Strong body, moderate sweetness, alcohol, it's rather messy.

330ml @ Ryan's shared with Alex for science. Appearance: copper with a white head. Aroma: cocktail-like, sweet, with some berries and grapes, and a bit of acidity. Taste: along the same lines, barrel character accompanied with some bitterness. Overall: nah, thanks.

Re-rate: Poured from 330mL can (wanted to re-rate this when more sober since I high rated it after going home following a big bottle share). Hazy dark orange with minimal white head. Bourbon and citrus, some Negroni cocktail elements. Maybe this fell off in the past month, but I was definitely drunk in giving this a 4.2 rating. It's still enjoyable. September 18, 2022 (9/3/9/4/17=4.2): Poured from 330mL can (pkg 05/11/2021; bb 05/11/2024; I probably kept this longer than I would've otherwise because I assumed it was an imperial stout like the rest of the Barrel beers that are Imperial Stouts... oh well, it's been in the fridge and getting it out of my inventory now.) Cloudy orangey gold with minimal white head and a fair bit of sediment. Spruce, citrus, bourbon. I agree whole heartedly with the comparisons to a cocktail and ultimately think this is the best Tempest beer I've tried thus far. Will see if they still have more in stock at the liquor store. Great stuff! (note: I don't really feel like it should be classified as a DIPA)

Can from Bar Beenhouwer. Hazy brown, thin, tan head. Aroma of orange peel, lemon zest, clove, liquorice, cough syrup, plum, unripe peach, brambleberry, caramel, bourbon. Taste has sweet peach, plum & raisin, sourish orange flesh in a caramelly & biscuity malt body; medicinal & herbal notes around it. Herbal hoppy finish, lingering sourish lemon and sweetish orange peel, warming bourbon alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Sourish Barley Wine of sorts; very hard to pinpoint. Not super, but nice experiment.
