To condition a stout on these beans is a high wire act where the malts and the oak must be in perfect balance. Leaning the malt bill to the sweeter, lighter roast side and restricting the time in oak to six months to impart a hint of vanilla keeps the divine light shining directly onto the coffee.

Can from Drankenhandel Leiden. Grindy coffee aroma with roasted malt, chocolate, bourbon, espresso, caramel, fudge. Flavour is medium sweet with a boozy bitter finish. Full body. Loads of coffee, fairly boozy with the bourbon. Strong.

Can. Almost black. Huuuuuuge coffee. Roasted malts, blackberries, cocoa, spices, earthy. Medium sweet and bitter. Medium bodied, a bit dry. Nice.

Roast and lots of burnt coffee. Something that almost tastes like raw coffee bean as well. Black pour with good mocha head. Bitter finish with a little caramel. Oily consistency. Can.

Dark brown. Fairly thick head. Heavy coffee flavour, with a medium malt backdrop. Aroma is the same, maybe with added toastiness. It's a simple chocolate-coffee thing going on. Strong alcohol in the finish. Not getting the Heaven Hill at all...so this barrel is several uses in or what?

I'm a big fan of tempest's BA beers, so this one was a must buy: a barrel aged coffee imperial stout with single origin coffee. Pours black with a thick tan head. Aroma is rather restrained, sweet dark malts, molasses, caramel, vanilla, rich coffee, Prunes, chocolate. Big body, very smooth and silky. Flavour is sweet, though tempered by a good bitterness. Rich dark malts, caramel and molasses, lots of medium to dark roast coffee with distinct roasty and chocolatey notes of Brazilian coffee. The barrel could be a tad more accentuated, mostly in depth and richness it gives to the beer. But there's lovely bourbon and vanilla here which fits beautifully with the coffee stout. Very good beer, could have even a touch more oomph for me and I'd love to see some different origins in the future (Kenya, Ethiopia, El Salvador... The choices are endless).

Poured from 330mL can (pkg 12/03/21; bb 12/03/23). Black with small tan head. Coffee and bourbon, hint of green pepper, the flavours really mesh well together. Balanced and the abv sits nicely.

(Can, 0.33 l, at Arde, 20220305) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had burnt malts, coffee, creamy notes and ash. Palate was medium bodied and dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, ash, coffee, vanilla and bitterness. Aftertaste had burnt malts, coffee, wood and bitterness. A delicious and balanced burnt brew with adjuncts.

330mL bottle, pours black with a small beige head. Nose is loaded with coffee and bourbon barrels upfront, followed by moderate roasted malt. Flavour is rich, with intense bourbon barrels and espresso beans upfront, backed by medium roasted malt, and some molasses. Really great bourbon character, which melds with the punchy coffee well. Excellent.
