Our Doppelbock is inspired by the decadent strong lagers brewed by German monks for centuries to stave off hunger during fasting time. This beer has a luxurious deep body, a complex aroma of bread crust and dark fruit and a gentle alcohol warmth. Lagered for 10 weeks to allow all the complexity to fully develop you may just be hungry for another.

Can at home in Hackney - picked up from HOTM I think. Pours clear red-brown with a small, creamy tan head. Medium sweet flavour with toasted malts, brown bread, some dried berries. Medium bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Sweet finish, more toasted malts, mellow toffee, some raisins. Tasty beer.

Can from Darts Farm Shop near Exeter. Dark brown with a cream-coloured head. Middling fizz - maybe a little too much for my liking. Very malty, with caramel, dates, brown sugar, a little chocolate, and a hint of blackberry. The alcohol is well hidden. Another very enjoyable brew from Utopian - are they the best lager brewer on the UK at the moment?

Can bought at Elusive Tap. Aroma has dark malts with equally dark berries and coffee. Opaque dark brown. Thin creamy beige head. Tangy sweet and sour. Dark berries and caramel. Bitter coffee and liquorice keep it down low into the finish. Ultimately its thr tangy berries that linger. Medium bodied. Oily. Flat-average carbonation. Long slightly astringent finish. Enjoyable. Big malty sweet but not overly sweet stuff.

Clear, dark amber beer, thin off white head. Aroma is malty with a good hit of caramel. Flavour follows suit. Caramel, malt, a touch of hop, a bit bready and some dried fruit. Very decent.
