Obsidian Peanut Butter Stout is a spin on Obsidian that was inspired by the peanut butter whiskey that has been so popular in the last few years

Deschutes brewed it with real peanut butter, and milk sugar to give it the creamy Jiff flavor we all know and love. But far beyond just adding the Dessert stout element, they also blended in a whiskey barrel-aged stout to add complexity, strength, vanilla tannings, and spiciness. Peanut butter and whiskey are pretty much classic Americana products at this point, so what better delivery mechanism then a traditional American Stout. The final product packs much more of a wallop than the original Obsidian.

12 ounce bottle. Bottled on 03/31/22. Opaque dark brown color. Small, creamy tan head. Roasted malt aroma hints at oak and peanuts. Flavor is bittersweet roasted malt. Notes of chocolate, peanuts, oak and whiskey. Sticky mouthfeel. Resiny hops on backend.

12oz bottle. Pretty unique combination. Rich, thick roasty malts, deep hops, peanut butter, and some mellow whiskey(comes out more as it breathes, warms) notes as well. Intense. Obsidian of course, being a pretty hoppy Stout, pretty much a Black IPA, supplies a solid hop balance. The amped up version is nice, but something about barrel aging and lactose doesn't really go together well. $9.99 four pack, very reasonable by 2022 standards.

12 oz bottle. Aroma soft whiskey, roast, weak peanut butter. Flavor follows that. With a medium plus body. I mean it’s good but I was REALLY hoping for a bolder character in the flavor. Lately it seems like I have les and less reasons to keep rating beer.

Bottle (3/31/22) pour from Total Wine & More, Brentwood. It’s a dark dark brown—virtually opaque black— with nice sparkle, finger-width beige head quickly fading to a ring and no lacing. Aroma is toffee with milder whiskey, chocolate and peanut butter. Taste is strong toffee over milder whiskey and peanut butter. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with thick frothy texture, average carbonation and crisp finish. Overall, I always like an adjunct-laden stout to retain its identity, which this does, but whiskey, lactose and, especially, peanut butter should be amped up. Not a special stout.

Draft at Yakima Public House. Dark brown with a thick tan head. Nose is kinda like Reeses with modest peanut butter and a little chocolate. Sets a good tone. Taste is mostly roast and very mild dark chocolate bitters. Fairly mellow actually, but not bland. Did not pick up on any barrel notes.

Good stout, although the bourbon and peanut butter are surprisingly restrained. You get more fudge, vanilla, and roast, with a modest nuttiness popping up in the middle and the whiskey relegated mostly to coloring the finish with an boozy oaked fade. Really tasty beer, just not what I expected.

Bottle from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours dark, clear brown with a slight tan head that quickly fizzed away. Aroma of peanut butter, chocolate and whiskey that doesn't seem bourbon. Full bodied. Flavor is whiskey, chocolate, peanut butter and burnt malt. I like that order - the PB is not ridiculously over done. Seems towards dry, but a little sweet. Bitter - from heat and burnt malt perhaps. Subtle PB is the way to go.

12 oz from CDA Powersports. Aroma has notes of peanut butter, chocolate. Pours inky black with a thin beige head that falls into a ring quickly. Taste is lightly sweet with a lightly bitter edge, finishing dry. The peanut butter is pretty subdued compared to over the top examples like Sin Tax or the Belching Beaver PB stout. Good stuff.
