I have a 33 bottle that I believe I acquired at a beer shop in Bruges a couple of years ago. I like imperial stouts considerably and also like Buffalo Trace bourbon. Is there anything that can go wrong here? Hopefully not. My New Belgium globe glass pulls duty this cool December evening. The body is totally dark brown, almost black, and there is no head, none. The scent is dark chocolate with a hint of coffee and some boozy effect. A taste now. Bakers chocolate, berries, dark plums, grain, barrel, alcohol, pecans, malt and a bit of syrup. There's also a small hoppy bitterness, an interesting surprise. The sensation is rather dense and I like that in a stout. Slightly sweet, not overwhelming like many imperial stouts these days and I like this also. The sum is greater than the parts.

A: rich dark malts, chocolate, coffee, woody, cocoa, bourbon, spicy, blueberries, complex.
T: full malty base, a lot of chocolate, cocoa, smoked touch, woody, bourbon, bit herbal spicy, quite oily mouthfeel, toffee, dried fruits, toffee, complex, no carbonation, more on the sweet side only 25 IBU, still really enjoyable for the style.

330 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with almost no head. Aromas of chocolate, dark caramel, sweet bourbon and rich roasted malts. Flavors of chocolate nougat, vanilla, sweet warm bourbon, and oily roasted malts. Warm finish. Very nicely put together and just the right amount of bourbon. Very good

Bottle from Beers@Moviefun. Cloudy black, quickly thinning beige head. Strong aroma of fondant sauce, vanilla, bourbon, green apple (acetaldehyde but less disturbing here), pear, wood, walnut, Irish coffee, soy, beef stock. Taste has sweet pear, date & green apple in a thick malt profile of (sweetened) fondant, walnut and dark fudge, very softly bitter with a thin meaty-umami note in the back. Earthy hops in the finish, lingering bitter fondant and espresso (with a dash of sugar though), vanilla and long, heating, sweetish bourbon alcohol. Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Elegant play between sweet and bitter, intense bourbon too. A real treat, again, but perhaps not as complex as the Warriors Of Angelhill.

Bottle from Dranken Vandewoude, Veurne, Belgium. A very dark brown/black coloured pour with no head whatsoever. Sweet, rich, bourbon, chocolate, caramel, slight coffee taste/aroma. Another delightful imperial stout from Belgium.

Bram Neudt really loves to make imperial stout variations - and samples I had in the past, have often proven that he does that right. So I was curious to find out what he would do with the most classic formula of them all (apart from the ancient 'plain' imperial stout, of course): imperial stout aged on bourbon barrels the American way, a concept begun in the nineties by Bourbon County Brand Stout and copied countless times since. Medium sized, mocha-beige, tiny-bubbled and creamy head, taking a bit of forcing to fully develop but remaining for quite a while after that; black robe with waferthin burgundy edges. Aroma of bitter black chocolate, cold Irish coffee, vanilla-scenting oak wood, mocha ice cream, espresso, clear bourbon, salmiak, roasted chicory, dried blueberries, brown rum, toasted pecan nuts, green broad beans, black pepper frying in olive oil and a touch of bubblegum or 'Koetjesreep'. Sweet, dense onset, candied fig and candied cherry, some raisin, very thin sourish edge and very light soy sauce umami - but the latter remains very faint and distant, with the sweetness dominating; finely tingling carb, very full, oily, syrupy mouthfeel, feeling 'heavy' on the tongue with early signs of bourbon heat. Thick slabs of 'fondant'- and Ersatz-chocolatey, pecan-nutty and toffeeish malts ensue, filling the mouth cavity with a lovely, rounded bittersweetness, though the emphasis clearly lies on sweetness here. Some mild coffee roastedness in the finish, quickly drowned in woody tannins (with that typical oaky 'vanilla' scent retronasally) and bittersweet, boozy bourbon; hops remain at a distance but operate behind the scenes as a director of subtle peppery bitterness, engulfed in toffee and dark-chocolate maltiness. Slight effects of bubblegum, Haagse hopjes, black peppercorns and liquorish almost distract from the essence here, but eventually the beer achieves its goal and presents a long, warming, thick and layered finish of toffee, cappuccino and pecan nut purée drenched in hot, sweet-boozy, peppery bourbon, piercing through the malts without drowning them, though still acting a bit astringent in the very end. Dark-sugary sweetness does remain a key factor till the end, but then this happens in so many present-day BBA stouts that it will not bother anyone; I personally prefer my imperial stouts roastier and drier, but as a contemporary American style bourbon barrel aged stout, I think this one performs quite well. I am satisfied - a tad too sweet and boozy perhaps for me, but it does meet expectations of what one would expect from this kind of stout today (Adroit Theory and the like spring to mind), and it is certainly a worthy closer of a freezing cold December night.
