Bottle shared with RJ, koszi Panni! Pours black with a tan head. Intensely fruity both on nose and in taste, grapes, apples and berries show, with a subtle peaty undertones, so I’d say the barrelling is halfway there, but it definitely lacks some deep flavours, the base is not providing and the barrel blend could’ve used some bourbon too perhaps.

A Cognac, Sherry, and Islay whisky BA Imperial Porter.

Bottle picked up from a Dutch online store (I think) had this at home Thursday 16th January 2024 listening to Emily Pilbeam standing in for Huw Stephens on 6Music, currently it is Round Table, but my god these three guests are gushing over every single track, yawn..... Pours black with a small beige head, tangy and sweet berry fruits, also get the slight elastoplast things from the barrel ageing. It is also a little smoky and there is a touch of spiciness. It's pretty good, like it.

Zwart bier met schuim wat snel wegzakt. Smaak is zoet en fruitig met dudielijk iets van cognac, en whiskey. Samen met de chocolade, vanille en ietwat zilte koffie echt een top bier.

Imperial porter by Estonia’s leading craft brewery (for me at least, but admittedly competition is steep), aged on cognac, sherry and Islay whisky barrels; thanks tderoeck for sharing. Thin, greyish pale beige, open ring for a head on a black robe with misty wine red edges. Aroma of melting black chocolate, chocolate liqueur, coffee grounds, chocolate sauce with cognac, clear but not too overpowering peat from the Islay whisky but far less sherry, cinnamon, mocha, blackberry jam, raw green bell pepper, vanilla-scenting oak wood (not overly strong here), hint of raw unripe tomato. Sweet, dense onset, candied dates, yellow raisins, softish carb with full oily mouthfeel; smooth toffeeish and deeply chocolatey core, pecan-nutty and coffeeish edges but remaining rounded and sweet rather than becoming all roasty bitter. Vanillin from oak is there, but tannic effects remain soft; retronasal peat is cleverly balanced with the more vinous effects of cognac and sherry, the latter even establishing a slight ‘grapey’ flavour in the finish, paired well with ongoing sweet chocolate and toffee flavours, a warming alcohol note and a peppery hop touch. All elements work well together in this construction, which is very much Põhjala indeed – but the line between ‘Baltic porter’ in top-fermented postmodern form and ‘imperial porter’ is seriously blurred here…

24/X/24 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker), shared @ ElManana+1’s place, BB: 15/XI/26, bottled: 15/VI/22, N0467 (2024-1153)

Clear dark brown beer, small irregular beige head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: cheesy, pretty peated, good roast, lots of alcohol, pretty oxidized, very heavy, more alcohol hitting the nose. MF: soft carbon, medium to full body. Taste: sweet start, very boozy, lots of alcohol, a bit sourish, some chocolate, bitter touch. Aftertaste: more boozy, pretty sweet, a bit oxidized, bitter, good roast, yeasty, some banana, caramel, sugary, malty, oxidized, some soy sauce, more caramel, hint of vanilla, decent but not great.
