A Belgian Red boasting a mellow aroma with a full-bodied and rich flavour

[Character]
Rich crystal malt flavors shine in this dry and balanced high ABV brew.
[Naming]
Akane's meaning is a specific, rich hue of red. Tastes can be very much deceiving in the world of beer but, if there is one that we can say looks like it tastes, it might be this brew. Dark but fruity, strong and rich, and yet balanced and beautiful. We give you Akane.
[Brewer's Voice]
The Toppa series is our way to showcase high alcohol beers, but our intention is to do so in as balanced and drinkable way as possible. The body for this beer comes from a special production method called polygyle mashing where we use twice the grain with half the water, making a much more concentrated wort. This creates the high ABV, but the balance comes from blending our house Belgian yeast with an American ale strain. This creates a finish that feels dry while also allowing the fruity esters of the Belgian yeast to complement the rich crystal malt flavors without overpowering them. The rich red color also comes from the crystal malt and makes this hefty brew unique!

Can from Mark at HopDog. Dark red, small head, nose a bit like barleywine but with big funky bready notes. Very sweet, complex flavor, lots of caramel. Nice bitterness to balance, silky oily finish that is just magical, like the feeling of a freshly oiled machine. Very mellow.

Two year old can, thanks a lot Mark! Cloudy amber red, off white head. Funky belgian, candy sugar, melanoidin, berry, watermelon, caramel, dark sugar, Dave says Kettenfett sensibilities. Satisfying to sip.

Aroma is so so but taste is lovely. Fruity but ovaltine kind of thing too.

Can. Rich malty nose, figs, raisins, dates, orange, chocolate, caramel, molasses. Wow. Coming close to quad territory. Dark reddish brown with a thick head. Huge, luscious flavor, tons of malt, dried fruits, stone fruit, light apple, spicy Belgian yeast, touch of roastiness. Very sweet and full bodied. Really full-on. Tastes like a real Belgian-made strong dark. I’m impressed, though a whole can is a bit overpowering.

KBC Akane 11% Imperial Belgian Red Deep reddish brown verging on mahogany with a dense beige head of foam that lingers a long time. Rich fruity and yeasty aroma of brown sugar banana bread. The taste on this NAILS a Belgian brown/red for me with rich malts, bananas and fruits. Very full bodied and rich, served in Belgium people would think it’s from there easily. A touch of boozy warmth in my stomach but that matches this cool dreary fall day well. Seriously good beer, I’ll get another few to she/share as this should keep very well.
